Two friends and I went to the range and took pictures.

Guns involved:
Bushmaster AR-15
Marlin .22
Ruger 10/22
SKS

Only mishap the whole day was when my friend had a round chambered in the AR and then opened the bolt when he put the gun down to talk for a second (left a round in the chamber pointed downrange with the safe on), when he picked the rifle back up to shoot he hit the bolt released and the round on the mag trainwrecked into the one in the chamber. I'm not an AR guy so was this an extraction issue? I would have thought that pulling the bolt back would have ejected the round in the chamber.

I have extremely limited experience with rifles, but until my 8yo learned to pull the bolt back quickly and efficiently a too slow or too gentle pull would sometimes leave the empty casing half in and half out of the chamber.

I guess that's the bolt-action equivalent of limp-wristing a semi-auto pistol?

Warms my heart to see younger guys out shooting at the range (sorry, I'm over 40 therefore "old").

Looks like a great day.

110 degrees here in Ft Worth today, heat index anyway, so I'll take looking at pictures of others shooting as good enough for now :)

AR's do not have the same type of ejectors as bolt actions.
so, for an ar when you pull back the bolt it should eject any round in the chamber as soon as it is pulled back far enough. no matter how hard you pull it back.

so yes i would say he should check out that extractor

edit-unless the bolt action has a plunger type ejector. that is the type an AR has.
either way the extractor should have held on to the rim

Mississippi isn't exactly chilly right now. It's 9:47 PM my time and 83 degrees out. Maybe the round ejected but didn't clear the action? I'm not really sure how one double feeds an AR.

I don't know the mechanics of it, but shooting M16s and M4s for the last 14 years I can attest that it's not that uncommon. "Trainwrecked" is about the best term I've heard for it.

BTW, that looks like a nice shooting bench. No hunching over and presenting your collarbone for a jolt of recoil.

after 1500 rounds through my mp-15 i have haven't had any sort of malfunction, save for working up loads, but i have seen a cartridge that "trainwrecked" pushed the bullet back into the case.

The benches are fine as long as your not trying to shoot an AR. My buddy had a hard time of it until he got to that strange position above.

Me too, but over 50.

Looks like they are having a great time.

Lots more .22 shooting going on with ammo prices up. I not only dug mine out, I traded a .357 for another .22 pistol. :D

I shot in 94 degree heat and at least 70% humidity yesterday. Had to have a towel to wipe sweat constantly. It will be nice when it cools down some. At least it was not 98 like last week.

awesome!

I am taking my friends to the range today. Going to shoot the WASR10 for the first time! I'll post pictures when we get back!
