Good Practical Ammo for Self-Defense Carry

The Winchester Ranger ammunition is good quality self-defense ammo. I use it and recommend it to my CCW students.

Ranger Ts and SXTs are different bullets. The Ranger Ts are a generation or so ahead of the Black Talon/SXTs.

SXT really means "Same eXact Thing"

As I understand it, Ranger SXTs are basically the old Black Talons with the black paint removed.

Actualy I seem to recall the Talons were slightly different and had sharper edged petals while the SXTs have more rounded petals to address criticism from doctors complaining they could cut through surgical gloves (yes I know a rumor, no proven cases etc.) As a round petal will have more surface area to catch resistance I would imagine that would cause the petals to be bent back further decreasing the length of time they are spread out while traveling through tissue. So Black Talons should still do slightly more damage because thier petals will be spread out longer. Also the black paint was a lubricant, like teflon, called lubalox (as in lube, and made of molybdenum disulfide) so even though the "Teflon cop killer bullets" are a misnomer because the teflon is actualy for barrel protection of hard metal ammo, and the actual teflon had no performance role in actual AP rounds such as the KTWs designed for police to better penetrate cover such as automobiles for police officers (which has nothign to do with JHP ammo like Black Talons and RXTs), it still was a lubricant likely with a function, not just black paint.

In fact I remember a recent picture posted on the sight of the two and it clearly shows that Black Talons keep thier petals spread out better and until the end compared to the SXTs. The sharp edges and angles on the petals also likely would be slightly more successful in damaging tissue as less tissue would be able to flow around the petals without damage.
