Since reading Cruffler's review of the 440 and reading through some posts on the RAPs, I'm getting interested. Is it possible for a local store to order one for me or do I have to go through the internet and arrange a transfer to a local FFL? What's the best way to go about getting one for the best price with the least hassle? I'm considering the 401 now, if that makes any difference.

I hesitate to help because I too want a 401 or 440 and they seem to be getting harder to find.

The only ones I've seen are on the internet.

This guy has some and at about the best price I've seen in a while http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28220

I've seen a handfull on gunbroker, auctionarms and gunsamerica (the one I saw on Gunbroker is overpriced at $300).

my brother got his 401 and 440 off gunbroker ... paid right around $200 each. You can see them here http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33102

RAP or kRAP? that is the ?

Don't get too caught up in the hype. These little doorstops aren't everything they would have you believe on this forum. I shouldn't be too hard on them because the one I shot did go bang most of the time.

As long as you don't want to feed hollowpoints you should be ok. And If you don't mind really stiff triggers. If you are into this sort of gun you may want to consider a used smith single stack. At least you can get parts and such for them.

I will wait till it is fully broken in before I pass total judgement but make no mistake this is not what you would call a reliable out of the box gun.

If you can wait, I would wait for that new little cz 9mm to be imported. Thats what I want.

I still have hope for my buddies gun as we both don't want to feel like suckers for listening to the hype here and else where. It's does fire ball ammo, not all that accurately but for <300 I suppose it will make an ok tackle box gun.

YMMV -bevr

Hmmm not sure about the issues Bevr has expressed having with his friends RAP.

Mine have been near flawless. My only issues have been with using cheap lead ammo.
I've had zero issues with HP ammo.
As far as the trigger is concerned. I have very little experience with multiple makes and models to compare against. the DA trigger feel is solid.. maybe too solid for those tastes that are used to other firearms. the SA felt perfect to me.
But once again take my opinion for what its worth. I only have my Mauser M2 in .45ACP to compare DA against.

Since Zundfolge just spent all his money on a new AR I know he's temporarly out of the market for a RAP.. so there is this one. RAP 401 on GB

Other than that I would just watch the main auction sites and THR of course.

Personally based on my experience with both models I'd be willing to spend $300 without batting an eye. But that's just me.

That RAP on GB is the same guy who posts his stuff here.

I'm in a position right now where I really really need a good carry gun. I've sold my Kahr MK40 and I really don't like carrying my Makarov (mostly because I don't have a good holster for it) so I'll probably end up packing my Steyr M40 ... which is a tad large.

It shouldn't take me too long to come up with enough for a RAP (as long as the prices don't rise).

my RAP 401 feeds anything and everything just fine. it is my primary carry. i carry S&B JHP 115gr.

IMO, it is absolutely reliable. it has never had a single failure of any kind. then again, i only shoot jacketed ammo, no matter how cheap or crappy it is.

Accessories, such as holsters, are hard to come by. Use uncle mike's or make your own holster (that's what i did).

this one, at least, has proven its worth to be a carry gun.

i don't make it out to be the end-all best gun ever, but I'm a huge fan of a gun that fits me well, is reliable, is concealable, and is affordable for blokes like me who don't have trust funds. (got mine for just over $200). given the quality, i would have been willing to pay much more, if i had the money to do so. but i didn't. and i still don't.

fits me well being a big key, too. i have slightly small to average hands. I like single stacks, and i can squeeze all three fingers onto that grip, unlike alot of people. i like the balance. i like the weight.

Search under "republic arms" rather than "RAP". There is still one left on gunbroker and it comes with free shipping and two mags, I had to buy my extra separate. It is a good price.

speer 124gr hps and S&B 115 ball

are all that have been shot through the 401 so far and it had no prob with the ball but ftf'd several times out of a box of 50.

I'm still holding out till the 500 rnd mark before I totally pass judgement. The reason I mention this is so nobody gets disappointed when theirs is not 100% out of the box.

themic the 440 I bought came with a holster I love, its a Bianchi Black Widow #5 S&W 9mm
It fits the RAPs perfectly

good info on the holster

i use an uncle mike's number... um... i think it's the sidekick pro #16

i pretty much chose one that would fit a K9 or a Sig P239 which seem to be similar in size

but... i also learned to make my own holster. used some nice vegetable tanned leather fitted to my RAP then fitted to my belt then tinkered with until it sits on my hip perfectly IWB.... and i got to do it with absolutely zero plastic or metal parts in it. pain to get on and off, since it was my first attempt, but it looks great and fits perfectly.

hmmm, themic if you perfect that.. maybe you should offer them to sell.
I'd consider buying one from you.

Just yesterday, I asked if any RAPs ever came through the pretty big store I was in. The dealer had never even heard of them. Guess if I wait till one's easy to get, the price won't be in the bargain ballpark any more.

yeah you might contact that guy on here CRAZYCANESPORTS (I think)
He has a thread of all his items for sale in the trading post.
I think he has several 401's but seemed to think that would be it for awhile
$250 shipped is a good price for it.
He's the guy with the 401 on GB

If you want to see something interesting do a Google search on Republic Arms of South Africa and check out the Blue Book values on the 401's and 440's

Another store, another guy with the puzzled look. Dag, I need to get one now. If only the CZ 452 wasn't fresh on the credit card and the wife wasn't watching. Not interested in 9mm (or 40 S&W) till now, but now very interested.
