So I have had some problems with priming 30-06 cases. Can anyone out there do me a favor and if you have an RCBS hand primer, take a pair of calipers and measure both of the rods that come with it for small and large primers. I've reloaded 357 fine but I think my problem is that my large primer ramrod thing is actually too short and seating my primers high. My small primer rod looks like its about 1.883" and my large primer rod is 1.860".

Large is 1.866 and small is 1.876 though I could have sworn they were the exact same length lol :)

I have the RCBS Hand Priming Tool that uses regular shell holders, not the Universal Hand Primer. The large rod is 1.868 and the small is 1.873. Emailing RCBS is a very useful tool in solving problems involving their products. They have always been helpful, knowledgable and prompt.

Call RCBS at their toll free number and expalin your problen to them. They will probably replace your priming rod if it is defective(too short). As previously said, they're really nice people to deal with on the phone.

Make sure you don't have the rod in upside down either. Rounded end goes inside the tool first. Might make a difference...

I had to make a replacement large primer rod for my RCBS, I had a spare drill bit the correct diameter, and squared the non working end, cut it long and then kept trying and grinding untill I got the depth I wanted, then rounded the end that goes into the handle.
