Thinking about putting a new barrel on a Remington 700. It is about 40 years old and a .308. Considering putting a heavier barrel in .260 Remington.
Any suggestions on barrel makers and what to expect in gunsmith costs to put the new barrel on and modify the stock. This was originally a Model 700 ADL and I put a Hogue stock on it many years ago. I have a Remington model 7 in .260 and I already reload for it. I have used the .260 for deer the last 5 years and really like it and it will be a starter gun for my grandsons.

The .260 going to be for deer too? Heavy barrels are more for varmints.
You should be able to sell the .308 barrel to off set some of the re-barreling costs. Even an old barrel. Isn't worth much though. Gunparts wants about $100 or less for a 700 barrel. No .260's.
You wanting a match grade barrel? An unfinished, 1 in 8, Varmint Contour, SS, Shilen runs $339.99 from Midway. No idea what your local smithies will charge to install it. Do know they're busy guys and it'll take a while. Runs $150Cdn plus the cost of the barrel up here.
The Hogue stock a synthetic? Some of 'em can be opened in the barrel channel. Some cannot. Depends if the stock is solid or filled.

I don't think it would be worth it to spend $500 on an old gun. It is an ok shooter but no tack driver. I do occasionally use my my heavy barreled .25-06 for deer, usually sit in a fixed enclosed blind and don't have to worry about lugging it around.

A Remington 700 receiver will outlast several barrels. With a premium barrel properly installed by an experienced smith, it can be a tack driver. I have customers who are continually scouring gun shows and pawn shops for beat up 700's to rebarrel.
I personally don't use threaded and chambered barrels, I prefer to do all the work in my shop.

I set up an email notification under "barrel blanks" on eBay, and have found name brand barrels for under $100. Most recently (2 weeks ago) a Pac-Nor rimfire blank for $90 plus $25 shipping as an example, saving well over $200 on the barrel alone. The money saved would cover turning and fitting a barrel in many shops. Would have to come up with extra if truing the receiver.
