Really, Really , HURTS! Maverick Mossberg 88

Sky,

Yes, I've shot everything through it. I can shoot 3 inch 000 all day. I can shoot slugs off a bench. Doesn't hurt anymore than any other 12 gauge. Maybe your stock doesn't fit well?

A buttpad and/or a ported choke. My 935 kicks worse than anything I have ever shot, including a steel butt plated 300 win mag. One shot and I was done, using 3.5", 00 buck was better, but not much. Added a ported choke and it was a world of difference. Next I am going to get a good recoil pad.

My 500 kicks no better or worse than my 870. I have never shot an 88, but anything that fits a 500 will fit it.

I have a Maverick 88...it sounds like it doesn't 'fit' you exactly right. Mossberg sells a kit of spacers that can be used to tweak the fit, and a SERIOUSLY high quality recoil pad is needed...like the limbsaver or kick-eeze mentioned by other folks

Also, the Maverick 88's or Mossberg 500's with the aluminum receivers are a bit lighter than other shotguns.

This Model 88 kicks so hard with those rounds that after two shots I am pretty much finished. I am 6'2" and 220lbs so I am a little bigger than the 12 gauge but it takes all the fun out of an enjoyable day of playing with the Mossie!
Exactly why I recommend a .410 for Home defense. Plenty of "Oomph", not too much "ouch"

foghornl yes; when I first got it I didn't even have a recoil pad on it! Who me; "I don't need no stinkin pad on my shotgun," all being said with a heavy Spanish accent even though I be Gringo!

Bought one of the Black 2.5"? rubberized slip on pads that has stopped the feeling of being struck by an axe blade and changed it more into a Sledge Hammer kinda strike. Some improvement, no?

The fit may not be right like a few have said...? I wanted to make some wise comment about the 410 but alas, you are right. It's kinda a cultural thing for when I grew up 410s were for girls and kids. Mine is bigger than yours kinda thing..Amazing how our thinking changes as time passes. Having said that, it is very satisfying to strike a hog with a 12 gauge slug and watch him be lifted off his hooves and flip especially if he made you mad!

I use a Maverick 88 security 20in for 3-gun, and shoot both 2-3/4 and 3in slugs, buckshot, and birdshot, from all kinds of non-optimal and moving positions, and it seems absolutely perfect to me.

Mine is bone stock, no added recoil pads or anything, and I do not have a complaint in the world. It feels and shoots like any other 18 or 20in Mossberg I have tried.

gotzero mine is an 18".... All I can say is you are a better man than me or you are missing some serious nerve endings; might wanna have that checked? Humor....

I am gonna get checked on stance and butt placement with my skeet shooting Bud. Kinda hate doing that; pride is a terrible thing not to mention if he shoots it and says I am a wimp then I will lose face, we go way back. Oh well such is life in the shotgun lane.

FWIW, I was terrified to shoot it offhand and moving, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not really awkward or painful. Maybe it is an issue about expectation vs actual recoil. The 88 does seem pretty light, and maybe that offsets expectation somehow? I hope you work it out! I am thrilled with what I got, even before considering the low price.

I have a Wingmaster with 18in. barrel. I shoot handcast 1 ounce slugs over 36gr. HS6 in it and it will beat you up!! It tears into the shoulder and punches smartly into my cheek bone!

Try some Brenneke magnum 3" slugs!

I actually had good luck with the Kopp (sp?) stock on my Mossberg 500 for recoil reduction. The pistol grip also helped, but the forward grip did not.

Beyond that you just learn to roll with it, like a safari rifle.

From the Mossberg website re: stock spacer set:

Considering that one gun does not fit all shooters, Mossberg® designed this new “system” of Stock Drop Spacers. It’s an easy and efficient method of bringing the comfortable fit of a custom stock within every shooter’s reach., SKU 95091
( 95091 )

MSRP is less than $20.00

Just got off the phone with my skeet Buddy. He just laughed and reminded me of all the dentistry work he was doing a while back. His guns were knocking his fillings out when he was shooting all the time!!!

He is Cajun so you have to wonder at some of the stuff he comes up with!! But I do remember him visiting the Dentist on more than one occasion.

His guns I have shot do not have the recoil the Maverick does...course his cost over $1200

Why is it that you never feel recoil when you shoot at an animal. But when you shoot at a target it is a whole different story?...Russ

Not sure why it's beating you up so bad, I put 8 boxes of 3 inch steel through mine without an issue (that's also shooting at less then optimal angles). Mine has the long hunting barrel though, so it could have something to do with it. For shiggles I ran some 00 through it (2 3/4) and didn't notice a problem.

Russ my friend if a marauding band of Velociraptors (the really big ones) were charging you and you had my model 88 loaded with buck and slugs after 2 or 3 shots you would probably figure it is better to be eaten!

I just called my friendly FFL about a swap for a 9mm he has. He is lusting after some pipe cleaners (2800) I have and some ammo so if all goes well I will get another 1911 or something else!

If I decide I can't live without a shotgun I will suck up to my Cajun buddy or beat him at golf and get one of his....I like it when a plan comes together!!

I think shooting a shotgun is meant to hurt. I don't know much about shotgun, by my double barrel coachgun hurts a lot too. Every time I get done, I have a purple red shoulder. I always thought it's normal though.

The only time I had to quit on a shotgun was a Maverick with pistol grip. I shot some buckshot and after maybe 10 rounds, I was done and had to put on the shoulder stock.

Really mucked up my shootin shoulder 7 years ago when an suv tried to occupy the same space as my shovelhead on the interstate. My 870 is still do-able (and painful) but my cut down single 12 is from-the-hip-only.

I long for a nice coach but I think if I ever buy another scatter gun it'll be an autoloader.

If a shotgun hurts you, you're doing it wrong.

Unless it's a single shot (lighter than any mossberg) with a hard buttplate and you're shooting 2oz (TWO OUNCE) turkey magnums. Then you're allowed to say it stings a little. Even then, with some practice, with some getting used to and with the right technique (hold on tight, you're going for a ride) it shouldn't bruise you even after a few shots.

Often, shotgun stocks are too long for most people. As such, it causes people to not be able to hold it properly and it hurts more. I have my stock cutdown and a limbsaver pad installed so that I have a 13.75" length of pull. It made a world of difference. I'm 6 foot and have slightly longer than normal arms as well. Others ahve suggested a wood stock, i suggest you get one and have it cut down to a similar length of pull with a limbsaver pad. It will likely solve your problem. Also, Frontsight had a lecture on shotguns that I attended and they reccomended the Mossberg 500 as the minimum level or quality and not the Maverick line. Before sinking any money into the shotgun, I'd consider upgrading from what you have to either a Moss 500 or Rem 870. Good luck.

Sky, I have a Benelli 12 gauge Nova Pump and the things stock is polymer. I hear you all too well because when I started shooting it the first word out of my mouth was, "WHEEEEEEW!". Next to me I had my father telling me I wasn't doing this, or that, when I knew for a fact I was. Tired of hearing his I handed it to him with almost grunt saying, "Here!". So he takes it so he can show me what's up and how to do this and he fires the trigger and says, "WHEEEEEEEW!".

Now when it came to getting over the kick, which I eventually did very succesfully, I started off shooting it without really focusing on my target as the recoil. I pressed forward using reload tactics, proper sighting, trigger control and stance while firing rounds consecutively. Eventually my body just got used to it and while the shotgun can still jostle someone I'm pretty comfortable with it and have no problem handling or shooting it anymore.

Well a guy had a tac type adjustable stock and pistol grip along with a top rail sight for a good price. I was just going to trade the 88 but figured I will try it with the new adjustable stock and pistol grip. If the new stock does not improve the fit I will do the trade for a pistol.

The last 12 gauge I had was a Remington 12 gauge pump that I shot slugs, 000, and bird shot from. Yes the Buck and slugs kicked more but I could shoot a couple of boxes a day without bruising most of the time and never thought that much about the recoil. Just hunting mostly; shotgun is supposed to kick!

This 88 is obviously not a good fit for me with the present stock so I apologize for sounding like a wimp but I am gonna fix it or swap it for something I can use.

Optimization ability with the stock coupled with my intent to fix or trade should give me satisfactory results one way or the other. Again thanks for your comments.
