Recently I was having an issue with my favorite load in a Storm Lake barrel. Another member posted that Storm Lake and others "short ream" their chambers so a smith can finish ream them to the correct depth for a customers specific load and COL.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Can I buy a chamber reamer through Brownels and carefully hand ream the chamber myself or does it need to be done in a lathe by a gunsmith? I just looking to cut the riffling and NOT extend the chamber.

I have watched my FLG hand ream a number of barrels, either to throat for a specific bullet or to open up the "minimum match (undersize) chamber" to take cast bullet handloads. So a lathe is not essential unless you are trying to catch up with Jerry Keefer. I prefer to leave it to a pro but you might be willing to give it a try. Follow instructions.

Beven Grams (Grams Engineering) did mine for $25. I think he charges $35 now but still well worth it.

That's a lot less than buying a reamer and gets it done by a pro.
You are correct. However, the problems is I live in anti-gun southern california where Gunsmiths are few and far between. :) However, I think your advice is worth the cost of postage to send my barrel to a reputable Gunsmith. Any suggestions?
