I am looking at putting a new barrel on my Mauser 98 and plan on keeping it an 8X57 and have been looking and researching most of the barrel makers. Have decided to go with a Lothar Walther barrel but havent seen very many reviews of their barrels. Has any one used Lother Walther barrel on a Mauser 98 ?? Prices are reasonable and the turnaround time is not as long as some. Some are 12 to 15 weeks or more. Any ideas ?? Thanks:eek:

Lothar Walther makes, in my opinion and experience, very good quality barrels, especially if you are looking to restore a milsurp with a stepped barrel.

I have a 7x57 and a .308 and cannot complain about either. They shoot much better that I can hold.

Make sure whoever does the barrel job that the barrel is made up tight against the ring behind the threads. Not against the front of the action ring. I've seen some that were done like that and the did not shoot well. The best support is against the rear ring. Al

I have been putting some LW barrels on rifles, and reading LW threads on forums for 10 years.

Little has changed:
1) LW CM barrels are very good, good as any for hunting.
2) LW SS barrels are tricky to chamber, because they are hard.
3) Woody [the rep in the USA] is a pain.
4) Brownells offers (6) LW CM barrels, and only the 7mm has a taper light enough to hunt.
