Jim In anchorage, I should have explained myself better. It had at one time a side mount scope one it as well as stripped out holes in the top of the receiver. Not to mention it came with a long tang stock. It was NOT in collector shape so I did not feel bad about sending it to the gunsmith.

I do appreciate the responses that tell the op to just buy a factory rifle. We do live in a time with an incredible amount of options.
In fact, I just won a Howa 1500 in .270 the other night at a fire department fund raiser. I would have bought a Howa before, but it is a pretty nice rifle!
It does get hard to keep buying factory rifles when I haven't gotten excited about what they have to offer for a few years. It probably did not help that I worked for the local gunsmith for a few years.

What's a long tang stock? You mean a post war stock on a pre war action? Look I am not trying to bust your nuts here but pre-64 are just "old guns" and can be had all day for $500? Cmon. I know the beaters can be had for less and I own a perfect example. A 1936 action that someone put a 50's-60's barrel on [brazed on front sight] Checkering all sanded off. That's going to be a .358 Norma Mag. But would I sell it to you for $500? Not a chance.
The pre war and early post war guns just have a look that tells you it was made by master craftsmen who had a lot of pride in their work. Great attention to detail and finish. Not like todays guns that are kicked out by a machine.

Well Mr. Anchorage sorry about calling it a long tang stock. Yeah, 500 was too much, and yes I still believe (as I said before) with a few exceptions they are just old guns. I wont be selling my post war M70 but you can make me an offer on my pre war one.
