Yesterday I bought a new to me used Cimarron/Uberti 1873 Cattleman .45 Colt. Its an Older Frame model with the base pin screw. I noticed a very small screw on top of the hammer where it is smooth and curves. Any idea what this screw's function is? I have looked at the documentation I got in the box and online and can not find another example of this screw. I have a pic of it. Any ideas?

Cock the hammer and see if it has a piece just below the firing pin. That is the safety Uberti used for many years. It is a hammer block safety actuated when placed in the safety notch, the first notch. A good safety, too.

The hammer on the right has the safety:

Yes, it has the same hammer safety like the one on the right. Do, you think its a screw for the safety mechanism? I noticed a similar screw on the underside of the hammer of a Older Cimarron Wyatt Earp Buntline I saw at a gunshop earlier today. Funny the parts diagram I have and have looked at online doesn't show the screw in question. BTW, I love this wheelgun.

The screw on top, as you show, is for the safety mechanism. The screw on the underside is likely to remove the firing pin, as on Colt revolvers. As to its size, diameter/threads per inch, I don't know nor have access to one.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Driftwood, should the screw be loose or tightened down? Mine appears very loose and I am affraid it may back out and get lost. Also, you said it covers a plunger and spring, what's that function? I am just wanting to know what everything is for on my revolver.

The screw is almost flush with the top of the hammer and is easily rotated.

Well, it's been a while since I had an Uberti with that type of hammer.

I seem to remember messing about with the screw. As I said, there is a very small spring and a plunger under the screw. The plunger extends down through the hammer and comes out near the 'safety notch' on the hammer. As I recall, the plunger is what makes the hammer block work. The little spring pushes the plunger down and shoves it out of the hammer to engage with the notch on the hammer. I seem to remember fooling around with the screw, and all tightening the screw did was increase the spring pressure. Back the screw out carefully, so the little spring doesn't go flying and you will see what I mean. I got rid of that revolver a long time ago, but I seem to remember everything worked fine as long as the screw was flush with the top of the hammer. Don't let it unscrew any further than that.

That's about all I remember about that style hammer block..

Driftwood, thanks for the info. You have been of great help.
