This weekend I'm trying a buddy's G27 .40 & G30 .45 at the range since I'm thinking of buying a subcompact Glock for myself.

I need to buy some ammo, what's a good round to start with that won't beat me up from a baby Glock, but will be a good introduction to .40SW & .45ACP?

For comparison recoil-wise, I enjoy shooting .357's out of my 3" GP100, while .38's out of my Airweight are a little snappy because of the small grip. But I realize a J-frame is a tool and not for extended range sessions. :)

I'd drop by the local Wal-Mart and pick up some Winchester white box ammo for range plinking. Cheap price, good quality and not too hot so to speak.

The subcompacts will add a bit to the recoil and grip especially if they don't have the finger extensions for the mags. The G30 is a compact so the 36 might have a bit more recoil due to its size.

Enjoy your outing.

Lennyjoe - I've heard that is true. The G30 isn't supposed to be too bad, but some people on the forums have said the narrow backstrap of the single stack G36 makes it brutal.

Can't confirm it for sure. I've only shot the G30 but have heard from cross talk of the 36 being a bit more of a handful.

In the past I've had a G19 and now own a G20. I prefer the compact over the mini's but am thinking of getting a mini for last minute CCW when I don't feel like strapping on my 1911.

.45

Shot the G30 today with Rem UMC 230gr ball, and it was not bad at all. Honestly thought the G23 .40sw had more 'snap' to it. :)

Shot the 27, own a 30 (and 19). Was surprised by the feel of the 27 when I tried it -- thought it would be unpleasant, but the bore sits low enough that it doesn't flip that much. The 30 is also relatively pleasant for a small, relatively light weapon. If you've had a reasonable amount of shooting experience with centerfire pistols, I don't think you'll have a problem with either using any standard types of ammunition. The WWB recommendation sounds good, as it's cheap and not underpowered (not Corbon, but what the heck).
