My next rifle will be a bolt .308. I'm hoping to buy a scout type, forward scope mount, synthetic stock. The Steyr is too expensive. Price limit would be roughly $1,200. Any ideas?

For $1200, you could make one out of a short action Browning/Remington/Ruger or Winchester. Just depends on which action you like best, and which options trip your sear.

Why would you want to make one out of something else when Savage makes one ready to go. Buy a scope and you are up and running.

Regrettably, Savage seem to have dropped their Scout from their product line-up - at least, it's not listed on their Web site. I have one, and like it very much.

There are a couple listed on Gunbroker, here and here, both NIB.

You could have Geoff Beneze of Beast Enterprises install a Ching Ring scout scope mount on just about any rifle you want for $175, including inletting the barrel channel and refinishing the barreled action with a baked-on finish. I have prototypes on three different actions: Remington Model Seven, Israeli M98 Mauser, and a Lee-Enfield No.4. Another good low-cost platform would be a Swedish Mauser. It's my impression that they improve the accuracy of the rifle, perhaps due to stiffening the barrel or dampening the harmonics or extending the bedding area, or something else.

Geoff is not in buisness at this time. I called him two weeks ago and he is having health problems. I dont know when he will be back in buisness but it didn't sound like it would be any time soon. He did tell me how I can make my own though. I'm building a .338-06 scout style rifle on a 1917 enfield action and needed a larger mount than he made because of my barrel diameter. There is another company out that does make them XS which used to be calles Ashley. Try them.

For what it is worth, I sent Geoff Beneze of Beast Enterprises two handguns to work on plus parts and money over three years ago and have never gotten any of it back.
Do business with him at your own risk.

Please to not respond with ideas of what I should do about it, I am merely passing this along as a heads up.
