I'm strongly considering a suppressor for a .22 rifle and I hate to deluge the forum with a bunch of noob questions. Is there a good website someone can recommend that discusses selecting, buying and doing the paperwork for a suppressor?

Thanks in advance.

A suppressor is not a silencer.

A suppressor simply suppresses the flash to a certain extent and counteracts muzzle lift to a certain extent. They are standard on the AR-15 and M-14.

A .22LR has very little flash or lift, so it is absolutely unnecessary.

Check out http://www.silencertalk.com Lots of professionals and hobbyists post there. You will find advice on how to fill out the forms, pick out a silencer or make one. It is a good idea to spend a few days searching the website before asking lots of questions. You can PM me if you have questions about making silencers. I do not know much about picking out a commercially made one though.

Shoobee,

Sound suppressor, silencer, muffler and moderator are all the same thing. They reduce the muzzle blast noise of a firearm. In the USA the words silencer and muffler are legal terms used in the US Code (and nouns) for sound suppressors. Even if they only reduce noise by 1 decibel, then they are legally a silencer and require ATF authorization to possess.

While there are a few devices available to the shooter that reduce muzzle blast noise and are not controlled as silencers, they are rare. Nothing matches the noise reduction of a good silencer. I think they enhance the shooting experience more than any other device a person can attach to their firearm. On a 22lr they are absolutely required if you want to shoot without ear protection and not risk losing your hearing. My wife recently started shooting and will not shoot without a muffler on her gun. Yeah, she is spoiled. :)

Uzitalk.com & nfatalk.com, both full of people who have alot of 1st hand experance and unlike silencertalk will consider owning something other than a AAC. Lots of fanboy BS on Silencertalk some days, it is kinda a AAC pet project.

Silencertalk is not very "highroad" to noob's, the search feature will get you more than a new post will there, more often than not.

Potato, po-tah-toe, tomato, to-mah-toe.

Same thing.

IIRC it reads "silencer" on most if not all of my form 1's and 4's, so that's what the BATFE considers them. It would also be unwise to build a unapproved "suppressor" and try to convince them it's not a "silencer".

Wasn't there an old manufacturer, long ago, that made them under the brand name "SILENCER"?

Thought I read or heard that somewhere.
