I'm thinking of getting an AK because I'm looking for something reliable with less recoil than an FAL or M14 (I'm trying to talk my wife into getting rid of her AR15 for something more reliable).

I've heard good things about VEPRs. I'd like to hear some advice from those who have owned and/or shot them.

Thanks!

I have a VEPR K 7.62x39 with muzzle break.

Excellent build quality for an AK, built like a tank, but weighs as much as one too. The only "problem" out of the box was a loose feed ramp screw, fixed with 30 seconds of time and an allen wrench.

If your wife doesn't mind the weight, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, but do keep in mind that it weighs about 10 lbs empty, and most of that weight is out front in the extra-bull barrel and trunion. Mine doesn't malf, but then again neither do my ARs, so they are equally reliable for me. Recoil is about the same also.

The 7.62x39 takes normal AK mags as well, which is a big plus.

10 pounds!?!? At that point ya mights as well get a FAL. I doubt mine is over 9.5, and with a brake it doesn't kick that bad at all.

I've been toying with the idea of adding an AK, especially with more recent high quality guns like the VEPR (a friend has a MAK-90: rough!). But a lot of it is the light weight. Heavier than my .308, and I think 'not so much.' Can anyone confirm this weight?

You are ok in the recoil department with the 7.62x39 or .223. If you move up to the VEPR in .308 you are back to FAL/M14 recoil levels.

http://www.robarm.com Robinson Armament has them listed at 8.5 lbs. Slap in a loaded 30rd magazine and you could very well be over 10 lbs.

I love Veprs. They are reliable, and built like a tank. They are heavier than a regular AK, part of that is the thicker receiver, and they also use a heavier barrel. But I don't think that they are really that heavy, they are pleasant to shoot and capable of accuracy that is pretty amazing for an AK type rifle.

I would strongly recommend you and your wife handle one. They make my milled receiver Arsenal SA M-7 seem like a lightweight.

I think you ought to consider one of these puppies:
It's based on the VEPR:

Its a Robinson VEPR KTR-03. www.robarm.com , click on "Russian Made Firearms", and you will see the link near the bottom of the page.

The main difference is that it comes with an M16 style rear sight and rail mounted to the DUST COVER, and retails for about twice as much money as other VEPRs.

I have a 762x39 VEPR K with the muzzle brake. I also have an SAR and a WASR....all three shoot great and havent malfunctioned. The VEPR is finished alot better and is heavier, but seems sturdier too. I love the VEPR, but I could do without the super loud brake, 762x39 doesnt kick that bad to actually make it useful, since its not full auto.

That is a Krebs KTR-03V, available from Robinson Arms also. Robinson just sends VEPRs to Krebs and he does his excellent KTR conversion to them and then sends them back to Robinson. You can also have Krebs do the conversion to your VEPR, but it's cheaper to buy it from Robinson, than to buy a VEPR and send it to Krebs.

I would actually recommend buying the KTR-03S instead. It's based on a Saiga receiver and is about 2 pounds lighter. The VEPRs are too heavy for a 7.62x39 to me. They weigh as much as a .308 FAL or M1A.

I had a VEPR in 223 and got rid of it. It was very well made and everything that my SAR-1 was not, but it just felt uncomfortable to shoot. It wasn't so much the weight but the way it balanced. Make sure you handle one before you buy.

Hay... There is another Vepr from EAA. It has wooden stock, and doesn't look like the above rifles..

One other thing - the VEPRs are very rugged, but they are barrel-heavy. Don't balance very well.

Nightcrawler - what kind of mount its that? Where did you find that picture? Interesting.

I got myself one of the bulgarian arsenal AK's. I just like the classic lines better than the vepr's.

Balance is really a very subjective thing. Muzzle heavy works for me pretty well now that I'm used to it.

You guys just wait until my RACE VEPR is done. :p .223 Vepr. Modified to use E. German Weiger mags. Modified stock. Muzzle brake. Krebs A2 iron sights. Rail with an EOTech mounted on it. It is going to be sweet.

Correia,

I'd love to see a picture of that gun, when it's finished. Who makes a rail for the VEPR? I know Krebs makes them for the standard AKs (Saigas, etc.).

Thanks,
Steve

I haven't decided yet. If I decide to mount the EOTech back on the receiver I'll use the Krebs dustcover, if I decide to mount it farther out I'll use the Ultimak. This will probably take a while either way. :)

I just read a post by Alex Robinson on gunsnet yesterday saying that RA is working on a folding stock for the VEPR in anticipation of the AWB sunset. Since the lack of furniture options is the primary "weakness" of the VEPR, I was really glad to hear this. Just FYI, for the other owners.

Why someone hasn't made a reciever adapter block yet, I will never know.
