I am considering getting a 9mm primarily for target practice. I would appreciate any thoughts and recommendations fron the experienced users out there regarding good accurate 1911 or other semi-auto 9 mm pistols with a softer kick than my .40 or .45.

New here. I tend to use the search a lot myself but since this is an interactive forum I will Throw in my .02 anyway;

I have shot Beretta 92fs alot (one of my favorites) and feel it is a great reliable gun. Just not real practical for a ccw. I plan on buying xd9 in a sub compact and have shot several hundred rounds through this model which seemed like a great package as well.

Searching is boring, but it bores one person.

Making every visitor to the site weed through dozens of threads each day that ask the same questions over and over is boring for everyone.

Smith M &P 9

By far my best shooting range gun, expecially after Ihad an action job done on it by David Bowie.

Can't go wrong with the Smith M & P.

That being said my G19 has been flawless and after an action job, it is one hell of a shooter.

That being said my kahr K9 has never failed to go bang in 4000 rounds.

My first choice of the 3 lisred is the Smith M & P. I really think they got it right this time.

I couldn't pass my buy up, when they were offering a $50 rebate along with two free magazines. they wanted me to own it..

Search function is way over-rated.

My recommendation: HK P30L

Accurate, reliable, amazingly soft shooting, and most importantly, way cool looking!

SInce the O.P. asked about a 1911 or similar for a Target/Range
run, I'll say I shoot 1911 and S&W 625 .45 ACP.

I got a CZ 75B 9mm Luger in May, it's very accurate & after 1,059+
rounds it's not had any FTF/FTEs - FMJs & JHPs in 115, 124
& 147 gr. weights. All steel construction of empty weight is 35.2 oz.
This makes if a great range gjun - Standard blued 75B has easy to
see white dot sights mounted on a rull length serrated rib. 10-11
find serrations with a plain flat on eacch side to minimize reflection.

CZUSA has good customer service, and Ghost Holster is the CZ Dustom
shop - the trigger can improved for SA - lighten with 15 lbs main spring
Wolf spring repacement kits available. 9mm luger WWB at WallyWorld is
cheap range ammo, compared to .45 ACP. The 75B does have the
frame mounted thumb safety similar to a 1911.

Mine was around $500 after transfer + S&H

Tell ya what, I got my first handgun a few months ago after shooting a Glock 9mm at the range. Did a ton of research and went with the Springfield Armory XD-9. I'll tell you, this gun is everything I could want! Recoil is far less than the Glock, the trigger feels more solid (to me), it's beautiful, and it (from what I've gathered) is a little less picky about which types of ammo you can feed it, than a Glock is.

In fact, I found a killer deal this weekend, and I'm planning to get a second one!

The search function isn't the best. I couldn't even find a C&R thread that I had posted!

Going back on topic, I bought the new XDM 9mm and love it.

Beretta PX-4 or S&W M&P. Both are state of the art depending on whether you like hammers with conventional actions or DAO striker firing.

I prefer the Beretta, my wife prefers the S&W. My hands are NBA big and the Beretta seems to cover a wider range of hand sizes with its inserts than the S&W does with theirs.

Witness!!!

My most enjoyable range gun is my 9mm, full size, steel, small frame Witness. Most accurate pistol I've ever shot. Hi-Power is pleasant also. RIA .45 is a blast. Forty in anything sucks. This is my opinion.

The search function is a great tool. But, new posters are just looking for answers. I think we do them a disservice when we suggest the search function. I say again, "the more you know and the longer you have been around, the more dead horses there are".

I would have a couple of recommendations. I would look long and hard at the new XDm-9, I am not sure when they will be out, but the XDm-40 is very impressive. I would also look at the M&P-9, I carry the M&P-40 as my duty weapon and I love it. I would also consider the CZ-75 as they are incredible buys, and I haven't heard of an owner who doesn't love them. It kind of depends on if you like plastic or steel and what fits your hand the best.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

I recently bought a Les Baer PII in 9mm. Very nice shooter. Also got a S&W 952-2. Excellent accuracy. Nice weight. I'm having trouble getting used to the safety. Both are single stack single action.

I have a nice BHP with a Bar Sto barrel. Single action but not single stack. Also have a CZ75BD with Bar Sto barrel. Very accurate. Not single stack nor single action. Had a Sig 226 Sport Stock. Very nice, just a bit large in the grip for me. Double action and double stack. My Glock 34 is very accurate, a bit chunky in the grip.

Lots of good answers for this question. One of my fave range guns is my beretta 92fs. Plus lots of hi-cap mags avail for the range.

The M&P is a great piece. I have a full in .40 and a compact in 9mm and they're both great. I would definitely look at a full size in 9 for a range gun.

But the XD and now the XDM in 9mm, Sig 226, 229, glock 17,19 are all good choices. Depends if there's anything else you want to do with it.
