Recommendations?

Sorry if this is redundant to other threads out here. I would call my self a relative neophyte to handguns. Though I have shot a variety of mostly 9mm in the last 25 years, they were friends guns. The plinker I own is Ruger Mark II.

My question is I am looking for a new gun (can be used). I have handled recently the Bersa 9mm, and Mak and have heard many nice things about CZ while on line. Of course there are many others. Based on this short list, you can see I am a bit price sensitive, but certainly want to buy quality.

I am looking at .380 to 9x19. Any recommendations/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You have plenty of choices in the two calibers you mentioned....Look at your budget and start to handle some for grip/feel at gun shops, pawn shops, or gun shows...

I just bought a CZ75B, I haven't taken it to the range yet, so I can't comment first hand on accuracy and reliability. Although, I can say the gun feels great in my hand and after some dry firing, the trigger isn't as heavy as I've read in some other threads regarding the CZ. I can however, tell you that my Ruger P89 has countless rounds through it and has never failed me. I've also heard good things about the Ruger P95 and though I don't have any personal experience with it, I do own it's big brother, the P97 in .45acp. This gun has also performed flawlessly. There are all kinds of bargains on 9mms. Especially, if you consider the used market.

Stay 9mm

Whatever you decide to buy stay with the 9mm. It will be less expensive than the 380 in terms of ammo price. also keep an eye open for used or police trade in's. AIM has trade in SIG 225's for about $350. Also keep an eye out for used Glocks and berettas

I like Glocks, and they make great 9mm at reasonable prices. But there are many good 9mm out there. A local gun shop is selling brand new S&W Sigma's for $299. The triggers are terrible but its tough to beat at that price.

CZ is a good place to start. I would stay with 9mm.

Based on the fact that you are considering CZ, I would guess that you're in the >$400 market. For new guns, the CZ is impossible to beat without doubling the price. You can get the Tanfoglio (EAA) Wtness (CZ clone) for a little less than the CZ; still a great gun (I own 2 in 10mm, though the Limited model is wayyyyyy outside the $400 range). There is also an incredible used market for sub-$400 9mm's including such fine pieces as the S&W 5906.

New handgun recommendations

Staying within the stated question. Take a look at the CZ82 in 9x18 mak. I recently picked one up $242.00 OTD. You get two 12+1 mags, cleaning rod and holster. Holster is nothing to look at but good for storage. The one I got is either new or carried and never fired but the finish even the edges is intact. SA/DA, Ambi safety and mag release, easy take down(similiar to PPK) I did have to polish the feed ramp and remove a small lip before the gun would feed hollow points, this was done with a dremel fine grinding wheel and felt polishing tip with jewelers rouge. Supposedly, you can get this gun also in 380 acp but the 9x18 is a potent round for a blow back pistol. Accurate too at up to 25 yds.

The CZ-82 is available a lot of places at around $200. These are Czech military and police surplus, usually come with a holster & 2 mags, and are in good to mediocre cosmetic condition and excellent mechanical condition. They are 9x18 (Makarov) which is a bit more powerful than 380 but not up to 9mm Luger levels.

The two I've bought have a lot of finish blemishes (they have a sort of baked on paint finish on the frame and slide, with other parts blued) but are wonderful shooters. And tack drivers to boot. I hit 12 inch square steel plates at 50 YARDS pretty routinely (I'm actually better with the Makarov.) With 12+1 capacity I even carry mine, as they fit the same FIST IWB holster as the Makarov. I can also use the Fobus paddle holster (also for the Mak) to practice draw-from-concealment scenarios at my range if I don't want to use the FIST.

Yes, the advertised price from the wholsaler is $209.00 but then you have to figure in shipping, commission and tax. Mine OTD $242.00. I'm sure you can get them cheaper if a dealer is a friend, you don't have to pay tax.

G19 does meet the criterion, as stated.

You can occasionally find these cheap, at gun shows--it depends on what the dealer is "heavy" on!

I am also orginally from the great NW! Welcome. I have a .380 Bersa Thunder and it is a great little pistol. It looks nice, feels good in the palm, and utterly reliable. The big bonus is that the price is right! You can buy a used one for around $200.

There are a lot of used SIG 226's and 225's (P-6) out there. They run from $350 ish to 600. They are, of course, 9mm's.

Stick with 9mm - it's the cheapest to shoot centerfire I know of. Get the Tanfoglio/EAA Winess. It is the best CZ type for the money!

I decided on the CZ-82. Looking forward to taking it to the range this weekend. I ran across a comment somewhere that for this and the Mak to stay with about 95gr ammo. Is this correct? All I have locally is 115gr.

My New 82

I would like to provide input on the CZ82. I ordered mine from AIM and received it this weekend. I opted for handpick for an extra $10, bringing the price to $219. It arrive looking like a brand new gun.
Very close inspections revealed no scratches or wear marks - really. I am very pleased. I took it to the range and found it to be a very good shooter. It feels very nice in my hand and the kick is very mild. I had 1 jam in each of the first two clips and none after. I am told I should have probably oiled her up before shooting for the first time. My bad.
