i am going to do some coon hunting at night with my ruger mark III "hunter" and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on a red dot.

here are a couple of photos of optics i was thinking of. im not sure what ojective size i want or need. i think im leaning towards the Tasco Propoint 30mm.

I will be watching to see what suggestions you get as well. I have the same gun and have been considering optics. I would like to use it on tree rats this fall but open sights and my eyes may not be up to the task.

This is what I run:

PDP BD on a custom Ruger Mark II.

Works great.

GL shooter....thanks for sharing. fill me in on the tasco propoint dots. how is yours different from the one i posted? im a noobie at these. what is the dot size and objective lens size?

No real difference. That is actually a PDP 2. I have a pair of PDP 3's on my Para guns on 9X21. 30 MM tube and a 10 MOA dot IIRC the dot size. They are the same as the 3's in that respect. They are hell for stout. I've run them both types for years on our race guns and never had a failure.

greg,
help me out here. when i look up the PDP 3's like you have, they all say 20MM. did you say yours is a 30MM. and do they not make the PDP 3's in silver?

and is yours a red/green dot? explain that. do the dots turn green when you dial them down?

i want a silver one with a 30mm objective and a 5moa dot. is that possible. and where do i get one. im having trouble.

any answers would be great. thanks.

OK, I'
ll see if I can clear it up since I muddied the waters!! :cuss:

The 2's and 3's both have 30 MM TUBES with 25 MM OBJECTIVES. My 3's have bigger dots because they were BIG DOT style (10 MOA ) Most that you see for sale now are all 5 MOA which is perfect for your usage. I went and did a quick check and my PDP 2 is a 5 MOA. The BD type cover way to much for good squirrel hunting guns and bullseye shooting like I am doing with mine.

On the 3's from MIDWAY:

•Reticle Type: Illuminated 5 M.O.A. Red/Green Dot
•Windage/Elevation: .5 at 50 yd.
Tube DIA: 30mm•Weight: 5.5 oz.
•Length: 5.0 in.
•Finish: Mossy Oak Breeak-up Camo
•Ringsets for dovetail-styled base, ocular and objective mirage hoods, haze filter caps, one Lithium "coin-style" battery and allen wrench

I also have a TASCO PRO POINT + but it is NOT like new production. It is bigger than the PDP 2 and 3 in the tube at 35 MM and I would guess a 30 MM objective.

Mine are RED at all times. RED/GREEN is done with a switch. The rheostat just controls the brightness of the dot.

Oddly enough I happen to have a Millet that is red and has a variable dot at 3,5, 8 and 10 MM. I used it on my 9 MM sub gun on my SORT team.

I have not seen any silver ones lately. Perhaps a call to Tasco will turn one up. I believe they were made several years ago.

thanks a bunch for the info greg. i am considering buying one of the Tascos but i am also thinking of the Ultra Dots......

not sure which one would work best in low light.

In lowlight they are all the same basically. How bright you adjust the dot is the big issue. You want it so it doesn't "flare". I try to get them almost transparent on target. For pure precision on the little Ruger I can almost see the X through the dot.
