I avoid Steam-based games when at all possible, and I've grown tired of most FPS's. But I took a risk and picked up "Red Orchestra," an Ostrfront based FPS that's supposed to be a rifleman's videogame. It's the most realistic I ever played. It's the ONLY videogame where aiming and shooting a 91/30 feels like it does in real life. Not only that, but hitting targets feels like it does in real life. You see a shape, you get a bead, and you fire. Did you hit? Was it a good target? Who knows. You have to go find out, though doing so will likely get you killed. You learn quickly to lay low, find hidey holes and be a sneaky bastard. You also learn quickly that when the guys around your spot are all suddenly speaking the wrong language--that's a bad thing. :D Chaos reigns. Shells explode, knocking you half senseless and turning you around the wrong direction. You get lost, you end up in crossfires, etc. etc.

I don't think the game will appeal at all to gamer types into getting high scores. And it's quite different from most FPS team based multiplayer "capture the flag" games. But for folks who like to shoot rifles, it rings as true as any videogame can.

Never played that game, but I have played Killzone.

Oh, what a game, what a game.

Timesplitter Future Perfect is a really good game too.

I tend to stay away from extremely realistic games like Rainbow Six and the likes....not enough action.

i love that game. add cajun47 to xfire. i wont be around much this weekend cause of a gun and knife show though.

i love the realistic bullet drop. i love the no fake cross hairs and hud. i love the fact the hand gun is useful. i love the great sound of the guns and tanks firing. i love the suppressiveness(blurry darkened vision) you get when bullets fly by. great game for anyone who likes shooting real guns.

i wish they made a realistic survival living off the land type of fps. like a lost hunter.

It's not half the game as RO, but the Infiltration 2.9 mod for the ancient Unreal Tournement is probably five times the firearm realism for manual of arms.

Run your 1911 dry, and the hands will release the slide on the empty mag before holstering. Bring the pistol back out, and the hands will drop the empty mag, reload, and slingshot the slide.
Similar iron sight system to RO as well.

Tactical Gaming Done Right - INF 2.9

I play RO as [CiA]Stiletto. (CiA is one of the more established clans: "Comrades in Arms".)

I've been playing since version 3.0, when RO was still a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. :D

I miss Infiltration (I used to be a mod in their forums AGES ago). I haven't played since I moved away from Windows.

Infiltration started the whole realism thing and they still did a lot of it better than anyone thats followed (The mechanics of their interface show up nicely in the Call of Duty games ... leaning and iron sight aiming) nobody has got the breathing down as well, and nobody has implemented a good stamina system like Infiltration.

If you've got a copy of Unreal Tournament laying around, I highly recommend you download a copy of INF and give it a whirl (just avoid their forums as it is a cesspool).

I wonder if there will be a Mac version of Red Orchestra.

RO was too addictive for me. I had to uninstall it just to get my time back.

VOIP makes it either realistic (i.e. Russian team speaks in Russian) or funny (e.g. German team speaks French!)

I lost track of this game back when it was a mod for UT2k3! What "Steam" version is this? HL2, basically? Where do I buy it/what does it cost? :D

How much time will I actually have to myself after purchasing it? Will my wife mourn the loss of her husband?

Steam is a method of game registration and keeping the game "current."
It was introduced with Half-Life2.
Once you purchased the game, you had to get a Steam account over the internet to register the game (and download the final bits to make it work).
A real pain in the butt for folks like me that play only off-line and still have a dial -up modem (which is why I never played RO-though it looks good).
I'm still playing Battlefield Vietnam; although it drives me crazy that the charging handle is on the left side for the M-14 and the SKS. Also, you cannot use the iron sites. COD2 did a pretty good with that.
Biggest disapointment of late: Vietcong 2. Wow, what a POS compared to the first one.

Been playing this since release. Never played that Infiltration mod, but of what I've played it's probably the most realistic weapons handling.

There are some niggling little things, like how you cock the Tokarev everytime you draw it (I'm pretty sure you can't de-cock it...). Also, if you look at your Mosin when you are carrying it, the bolt is horizontal as it should be. But when you look at other players, their bolts are at an angle, like the sniper version. Only tiny details though, the sheer fun and atmosphere of the game makes up for it.

RO appears to be a very cool game.

I play mostly games based on the Battlefield series. I am a current developer for the mod Forgotten Hope (Historically correct and fairly realistic). It is worth a look to people interested in WWII- our upcoming campaign is set in 1941-42 N.Africa.

I used to play Ro all the time and I was even in my clans ([Tx¹] www.xiled-ones.net) Ro section but it sadly fell appart due to lack of community so i havnt played since the last update but if any1 wants a game add me on xfire as sgtirwin and well arrange sumit, also my clan has a ts server if you would like to join it and join in our banter just xfire me and ill send you the ip and the password.

I'm still learning in the tutorials, which are a lot of fun themselves.

Steam is a way the game companies can sell you a game without the game on it. Basically all you buy with a Steam-based game is a CD with a license on it and the latest Directx and Steam programs. Steam then sends in your CD code and you have to DOWNLOAD the whole game. I have an ultra-fast cable, but even so their servers are so clunky it took hours to download RO. It was like traveling back in time to the days when I had to play a tape for my C-64 to read, flip the tape and then an hour later the game would fially run. On top of this, Steam is notorious for crashes and exceedingly poor service. If you ever want to put it on a different machine, you have to do it all over again. It's also very difficult to sell or give away the game once it's registered to you (which is the real point of the whole thing).

Like I said, if it wasn't a great game I would never put up with Steam.

Cosmoline why didnt you just go down to your local games shop and buy the boxed copy thats what i do for all my steam games lot easier and faster to load.

Even if you buy a boxed copy of a Steam game, you still have to use Steam to "unlock" and verify the content that you've already paid for. Steam runs everytime you run a Steam game; and if there has been 200mb of patches and updates since you've last booted, Steam downloads them all and installs them before you are allowed to continue. Last time I booted Half-Life 2, it took about twenty minutes to get into the game; and I have broadband.

I know about steam verifing the games and that but that usally takes bout 5 mins for me and updating new games doesnt take that long, btw does any1 else loose there favriote servers everytime steam updates its really anying.

Maybe the licenses work differently over there.

But all Steam aside, it's a cool game. I just played a bout as infantry support for a tank unit. A panzer's shell was deflected off of an IS-2's heavy armor, then keyholed, flaming, right to my feet, knocking me back but failing to explode. I've never seen anything like that in a game.

I have also confirmed that 91/30's cannot blow up a Panzer.

Heh...

We gun nuts are CONSTANTLY b****ing at the devs on the game's forums about the little niggling issues (in particular, the G41, G43, and SVT40 lack bolt hold-opens, rifles' cocking sleeves magically move back after firing, etc.), but the poor devs are always too busy working on more content (particularly maps) to be able to get to the silly stuff.

I was playing with a serviced G43 this very night, and I couldn't get the bolt to hold open on an empty mag. The bolt had a manual hold open, but no bolt release like a modern semi-auto. So I wouldn't expect to see a G43 hold open on the last shot.

Do they load the 43 with mags or stripper clips in RO?
