I need some help with an old memory. I seem to recall that you could safely reduce powder charges of SR 4759 to 60% of the maximum level. That made for some mild and accurate cast bullet rounds in 30-06. I haven't tried that in over twenty years and can't find anything to confirm my memories with computer searches. My notes from the time are long lost.

Any confirmation of that memory or other advice is appreciated.

I think 4759 was made to be a smokeless alternative for high volume cartridges developed for black powder.
I would not reduce 4759 to a 60% load density without having verified published load data from IMR/Hodgdon.
You can down load a PDF of the Lyman reloading handbook 48th edition which has loads for cast bullets with SR 4759 in 30-06 Springfield.

What joneb said. Lots of great, printed data on that powder. Lyman has plenty, starting there should get you on the right track.

SR-4759 was designed to use in rifle calibers for reduced loads. It is very bulky and fairly fast as far as rifle powders go. Speer manuals were full of loads with it for rifle calibers.

You are not reducing the SR-4759 loads to 60%, you are getting reduced power loads for the caliber with full charges of SR-4759.

Thanks for the help. I planned to stick to the published data. As pointed out, there is plenty of that. I just had an itch to find out if my memory was playing tricks on me, which was quite possile. That's why I only go with established info from the producer.

At least we have AA-5744 now, which is very similar.

Although I still have a little bit of SR-4759 left.
