Hello all. I am just starting in reloading not so much to save money but tired of ammo shortages every time people get spooked.
So, I have short barrel rifles in .300 AAC and .223 and trying to find best powder & amount for 8 inch & 10 1/2 inch barreled rifles but looks like data is for 16 to 20 inch barrels.
I'm thinking might want faster burn powder due to short barrel.
Any advice on reliable place to find the info.
In the .300 blackout I shoot both sub sonic suppressed and supersonic ammo.
thanks..

I cant speak to the sub sonics... but I like BLC-2 for general use. I think CFE Black and 223 are kind of the new kid on the block in that case size.

If you aren't looking for ultimate accuracy I would find something that meters well and is versatile. Test a few pounds then buy a jug.

Pretty much everything will shoot better than factory but if youre taking the time to prep cases you might as well go for best accuracy.

For your blackout.... H110/W296 & 125gr Speer TNTs is a winning combo. Another powder I'd suggest would be A1680 for your subs. There's an overwhelming number of bullets & powders that run great in the blackout, only struggle might be sourcing components.

^. Agreed, as well as better suppression for the faster powders. That said if you are wanting the firearms to function as a semiauto, you can’t get very far off the beaten trail. That’s magnum pistol powders for the 300 and the usual suspects for the .223.

"Just getting started in reloading"....How new are you? What you should do, depends on where you are in the process.

How new to reloading? Actually I would say I'm an embryo. I have not touched a single die yet. I am familiar with the reloading process and have read massive amounts on line, books and well now this forum. I have ordered a Lee Classic Turret press kit and die sets for .233 rem. .308 rem and .300 AAC., powder charging die, and 3 extra 4 hole turrets. A replacement after market ergo handle.
I have also ordered a Franklin Arsenal brass tumbler, media, a digital scale, digital calipers, Hornady One Shot case lube.
So, while I await Amazon I am just continuing to seek more knowledge on this topic.
I do think I would prefer to decap before tumbling brass ( trying corn cob media) and looking for most reasonable way to do, thinking not on turret press.
Also looking for good additive to corn cob media to help clean up brass.. advise? necessary?

Get a notebook of some sort to log all your reloading information. Segregate your brass/reloads, assign them lot numbers and keep info in the log.

For corn cob/walnut media - add approx a tablespoon of Nufinish wax, tablespoon of mineral spirits/paint thinner and run tumbler 5-10 min to mix, otherwise it will tend to clump, add brass and 2 used dryer sheets cut into quarters (they catch the dust and will turn grey to black). Add brass by lot number, tumble 1-2 hrs. throw away the dryer sheets.

If you tumble with primer in, the decap operation will clear any media that may have gotten in primer hole. I have single stage press, and decap and prime on press (30 yrs) .

The ammo companies don't load for short barreled rifles. You'll get lower velocities than the published loads, but your getting lower velocities from the factory loads. Just go with the published loads and expect lower velocities (to the tune of 35 to 75 feet per second).

300 Blackout is easy. It's basically a large magnum pistol cartridge. For the most part it uses the same powders used in large magnum pistols cartridges.

I've got a 7.5" upper with a linear comp and all the standard loads work just fine.

Thanks Texas 10mm . I do want to load some 300 blackout with 220gr bullet & subsonic. However would like to keep same ammo for rest of my AR's to keep it simple even though I have a mix, barrels of 10.5 inch, 16 inch and 20 inch. Looking forward to playing with 7.62 loads for AR10 ( LWRC REPR ) to find the sweet load for it.
By the way , love the 10MM, my favorite for personal defense and have several handguns in that caliber.
Thanks again & Semper Fi

Thanks BIHJ I am ok with somewhat lower velocities on my SBR's as they I see them for close quarter defense, not looking for more than 25 meters or so.
Was just thinking a faster powder to finish pushing in the shorter barrels and maybe less muzzle flash.
Welp, sounds like best to stay with recommended loads in Lymans etc.

Im currently running Hornady 190 gr Sub-X over 12 grains of 1680 out of my 10” barreled .300 Blackout SBR with an AAC Cyclone suppressor. 12.5 was too close to supersonic speeds for my liking.

I also worked up a load with 11.5 grains of 1680 under Hornady 208 gr BTHP was my old loads until I started with the 190’s.

My new 50th ED Lymans reloading book now has a lot of 300 AAC/Blackout loads in it. First edition to have it.
Hello Telum
I do have this 50th Lymans also. I do see in Lee's 2nd edition of Modern Reloading they are showing Hodgdons CFE Black powder. So I looked it up and appears Hodgdons has made this specifically for 300 AAC blackout and especially subsonic loads.
I ordered a pound and will check it out.

CFE 223 and BL-C is what I use in my 12in barrel! Really like CFE 223 as I seem to use more of it now!
