Since I figured out that I like to shoot more than my checking account allows, I’m contemplating reloading. Before I buy a piece of equipment though, I would like to learn more about the subject to determine if it really is for me. I’m a fairly competent DIY kind of guy but have absolutely no clue about the reloading do’s and don’ts.

What reading material do you guys suggest to start with?
Also, any DVD’s you would suggest?

Thanks for your help. God bless,
Disciple

No dvd's or books to advise but a little info. DO IT! I can load 50 rounds of 40S&W with a plated lead safe bullet for $6.10 I can load 38SPL box of 50 for $5.90 Sure beats the prices in the stores.

I'd say go for it but prob need more info to know for sure.

How often and how many rounds/trip do you want to shoot, and for which caliber(s)? If it is 100 rounds of 9mm/month or something then I'd prob say it isn't worth it. Also, how much free time do you have? For me that is always the biggest issue with family. I'd spend more time if I had it.

And beware the "saving" money argument. True if you look at how much you could have spent, you will be saving, but what typically happens is you spend the same, just shoot more rounds.

Welcome to THR.

Reloading can be a rewarding hobby in itself, as well as saving you 50% or more on the cost of your ammo.

The ABC's of Reloading is a great book to get you started.

The "stickies" at the top of this forum are also good reading.

That brass (not aluminum or steel) case that your gun ejects represents 50-60% of the cost of that box of ammo you bought. It (the brass case) can be reloaded many times with perfect safety. Aluminum cases such as the Blazer ammo and steel cases such as much of the communist block surplus ammo are not suitable for reloading.

There is no magic or super-technical things about reloading. Just common sense and learning the basics well is all that is needed.

Again, welcome to the forum, and be sure that we all are here to help with your questions.

If you shoot a bunch you need to. You will have to be detail oriented and have a place to work with no distractions, but it is well worth it for many reasons. Wait till you cast your own bullet then load it and then shoot it. You will have a hard time getting the grin off of your face with a stick.

I cast my own and have enough brass already for free. I got 200lbs of lead for free too(ask at tire shops). All I have in my .38, .357, and 9mm is powder and primers, so it costs about $45.00/1000 for me to shoot pistols. It's more for the rifles because I buy fmj for them, but still way under half of store prices. Be aware that this is addictive and you will not save any money when it is all said and done. You will shoot a lot more for the same price, but you probably won't spend less, and you will shoot more. Win win all around.

If you are anywhere near middle tenn let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Bullseye308, you're right about the addiction. I'm now buying different caliber guns just so I can reload for them. My dad loves to shoot old 38S&W 's about 100 rounds a year. So off I went and bought a die set and i'm getting ready to load.

After reading The ABC's of Reloading, I would suggest reading the Lyman's reloading manual. I find it the least biased of all the manuals and it is very informative when it comes to how to reload to boot.

That is so true. Sadly though there are not too many humble mentors online. I've found some here but I was sorely disappointed by another board I went to looking for help. All I got was disrespect and denigration. My final comment to that post was that I wasn't returning to that forum because of the criticality shown me and my request for help and wisdom.
