I've been reading and also posting in the reloading section regarding the primer and component shortages our fellow shooters have been experiencing.
I use only Winchester primers in my two Dillons and found myself running low on large rifle primers. Called all the local shops in my area and no one had any Winchester primers in stock at all. My buddy and I made a 140 mile round trip to buy some. For the past three days I have been trying to find once fired 308 cases for my M1A. No luck around here and the prices on Gunbroker are ridiculously high. Ended up driving another 40 miles yeserday to find some brass. Where is this post leading? After talking with the various gun shop people, the consensus is that many reloaders are hoarding components, buying 8 or 10 bricks of primers at a time, out of some irrational fear of a nationwide ban on primers, brass and powder. Our Government has much more pressing problems now with the economy and the failure of various lending institutions then to attempt some "backdoor" ammo ban. If there is a ban we are doing it to ourselves by hoarding...remember the primer shortage a few years ago. I welcome any and all comments from around the country about your experiences.

I've been able to find everything but small rifle primers. They just don't exist anywhere. But then I found some at SSA for $$.

Components are getting scarce in my area. Glad I hoarded all I'll probably need for a good while.

Wouldn't count on that one bit. Did you miss the AG's recent statement on gun bans?

So much or reloading. I just spent a ew hundred on ammo to day and said screw it, time to buy a press. Maybe that is not the answer either.

Loadedround, dont beleive the BS about the government being too busy to think about gun contol, you can bet your azz they are thinking about gun control, ammo control, components control, draconian taxes on ammo and compontents, shipping restrictions on all of the above, licensing, registration, anything they can do to impinge on your RKBA.

Bill2e: Sure it is - don't let the shortages of components deter you. It will just take more time and effort to find what you need - no different than trying to find the finished ammunition you are looking for now.

I just bought 10k small rifle primers from powder valley on Mon, they shipped today.

Sure stuff is harder to find, people are obviously hoarding. It's not like all the manufactures just stopped making stuff. Just keep looking, everything is out there at reasonable prices.

I've had to alter some loading decisions. I had some bullets back-ordered from Midway since Nov. Switched that to a different bullet, and now they're shipping. Otherwise, by all means, things are very tight. I understand that the people who make all this stuff were anticipating soft sales, because of the recession. Since the election, they've increased production. It will take some time for that to catch up with all these back orders, but then there will be "enough", so that local shops can get back to something like normal.
3 days ago, a guy who lives in Elko NV told me that the biggest copper mine in NV is running strong, but every ounce is being sold to China. There are a lot of influences at work here. Part of the result is that Americans are mobilizing more firearms and ammunition than at any other time in history.
Remember in the 10 points of firearms control that was put out by the Osama people back at election time, he said that he didn't believe that he had the resources to enact firearms confiscation. Now, he would need 100 more times the resources that were not available then.
