I've had a Rem 742 in .30-06 for years and put a nice looking 740 in .280 Rem on layaway at a local shop.

I'm figuring on reloading for them like they were a Garand, using powders like IMR4895, IMR 4064, etc.

Is this a good plan, I know they very designed for factory ammo, but I figure medium burn rate powders would be my best bet for not hammering the gas systems and the locking lugs.

Wow! What a co-incidence. I'm looking for information for loading for my 30-06 742 also. I had looked into it a long time ago, but never got around to doing any loading.

While you wise and knowledgeable folks are answering the OP, perhaps you can comment on specific things to take into account for semi-auto's and specifically the 740 family. I remember that they could be a bit persnickity and you sometimes needed to load lighter (or was it heavier) for better reliability.

[Edited to add]Also, do you recommend faster, slower or medium burning powders?

Thanks
