I"ve got a marlin 336 and wanted to know if you can buy the hornady leverlution bullet by itself and play with the reloading, or if I am stuck.
a cheap offbrand copy would be even better.

If you want a darn near duplication of the LeverEvolution, try some Remington 150gr CorLokts (component bullets, widely available at VERY reasonable price) over 35-36.0gr of RL-15. Gives 2,400+fps from a 20" bbl. (not 24" bbl!).

Sight-in 2.5" high at 100yds. Gives a "zero" of about 175yds, 4" low at 200.

This will do anything you need to do with a .30/30.

If you want to try something a little heavier, use the Remington 170gr Corlokt over 33-34.0gr of RL-15. Gives 2,300fps from 20" bbl.
I can't decide which of these two I prefer. I took a large doe with the 170's last year on the run at over 150yds. I was amazed at the performance of the bullet, as I'd had 170's fail to expand sufficiently in the past and lose deer. The Remington Corlokts in the .30/30, .35rem, and .45/70 are nearly unbeatable. The LeverEvolution's are only slightly better IMO. But at 2-3x the price and NOT available to handloaders.

I personally would refuse to load a pointed rifle bullet into a .30-30's magazine tube. It's just too easy for a pointed bullet to set off the primer of the round ahead of it in the tube.

The LEVERevolution bullets have a soft polymer tip that's supposed to prevent this from happening.

Nosler Balistips

I think it was Nosler that first came up with polymer ponted tips...

I wonder how they compare...:

They don't compare.

The hard Poly-tip bullets are completely unlike the Hornady LeverLution bullets.

They use a soft rubberlike polymer tip to prevent one round setting off the next round in the magazine under recoil. The tip is soft enough to deform under recoil then spring back into shape.

You should never use any type of hard pointed spitzer bullet in a tubular magazine due to the danger of a chain-fire magazine explosion.
