He's wanting a hunting scope guys...he doesn't need a VXIII. That has a few too many bells and whistles IMO. I don't use windage and elevation turrets on any hunting rifle. I sight in the scope and that's that. I imagine this is what 1911austin will do. A VXI or II will do that just fine. Unless you are going to be range finding something at 800 yards, and then calculating how many clicks it takes to zero in on that range, etc, what good do all those features accomplish? I think a lot of people here are getting a little over-zealous with the scope advice, albeit with good intentions.

IMO if someone can step up to the VX-III then that would be great, the extra money buys you better glass, not just more features.

WhiteKnight suggested getting a VariX-III, they are not the same as the newer VX-III. The new VX-II has the same features as the Vari-X III and is in essence the same model line.
I would say the VariX-III is as good as the 4200 (better in some aspects), so the VX-II or a Vari-X III would actually be a better than an Elite 4200 when price is factored in. Compare the new VX-III to the 4200 and I don't think the VX-III has enough of an advantage over the 4200 to warrent the higher price.

So...if you examine the attributes of Leupold's model lines then they didn't jump up in price all that much, they just changed the labels on the scopes.

To be frank, I don't think that the VX-III has better glass than the 4200. As a matter of fact, I'll say, and in so doing incurring the wrath of Leupold fans, that the 4200, to me, is a clearer, brighter scope than the VX-III line.

However, what you really need to do is look though several different brands of scopes. You may learn that when you look through the 4200, you can't see crap out of it.

I find that to be the case with the Nikon Monarch. The Monarch has quite a good reputation, but I swear they don't seem that clear to me. Leupold is the same way; great rep, but it, too, just doesn't work for me.

Like I said before, look through several scopes in your price range, and get the best one that works for you. Chances are, you will not be disappointed.

I think the NIKON Monarch is as bright if not brighter to ME than my Vari-X III's, but the Leupold scopes have a LOT more eye relief...or so it seems.

I've learned to like that and have the Big NIKON on my .223 AR :)

Thanks for all the replies. I was debating between Nikon and Leupold but in the end, I have settled on a Burris Signature Select 3-12x44mm. I got the opportunity to use one and really liked it. I seem very bright and clear with good eye relief. A friend has one on his 300 win mag and has had no problems with his. My dealer ordered it today and I will have it for $350 next week.
