These reports of Model 700 trigger/safety malfunctions have be around for years and number in the hundreds. Remington has been able to bury and/or ignore or buy off these folks depending on how strong their case was. As Mike Walker pointed out, Remington chose to follow this path because of the cost, not because they thought their case was righteous. I will never buy another Remington not because they made an honest mistake, but because they have been able to cover it up in a weasel-like manner that I have come to expect from those in Washington. Shame on Remington and Cabelas (who should know better). You Kool Aid drinkers out there should be pleased…

I think there are at least two sides to the story. There are a number of other threads that are active on the Remington Model 700 issue.

Better not buy a Ford. remember the '74 Pinto? Toyota of late? Forget Bayer aspirin, Google them in WWII and see what they made.

I'm po'd at Remington for leaving the door open to anti-gunners. But the reality is that a lot of companies have a past that isn't all rosy. I'm not going to play the pawn in the anti-gun chess game. The can't make guns illegal. But they can screw up the company IPO and kill the company. No company no guns.

Separately I hope this is a wake up call to the "oops sorry I muzzle swept you" crowd. NEVER sweep anyone or anything with the muzzle.

I believe Remington was dealing with the issue on a case by case basis. It is estimated that at most 1% of the M700's have this problem. People get hurt when they don't exercise muzzle control, but no gun should fire when it is on safe. However, you can make every M700 do this if you lighten the trigger. David Petzal with Field & Stream magazine had an interesting take on the issue. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs...al-different-look-remington-model-700-trigger

I will continue to buy Model 700's as I think they are one of the best off the shelf rifles made today overall.

One of the worst enemies is the fact that the trigger is so easily adjustable, and so many people who have no idea what they are doing try for a gnat's-fart trigger and make the gun unsafe. I'm not saying all the malfs are due to this, or even most of them, but I bet a lot of them are. If you want a gnat's-fart trigger, install an aftermarket double-set match trigger.

I will go on record saying that 99.9% of Remi 700's "safety" issues are a direct result of IDIOTS messing with the fire control system despite the fact they know not what they do.

Much like the vaunted home brew 1911 "trigger" job that results in doubles, hammer follow, etc...

This is an operator issue and NOT a rifle issue.

PERIOD.

I never 'messed with' the trigger on my Model 700 and it fired off a round when I flipped the safety off. Of course I had the barrel pointed in a safe direction, so no harm done, except for my ringing ears.

What year and how old was the 700 at the time?
