I picked up a Reminton 760 pump rifle the other day off of a friend for $150. It's in good shape. He inherited it from his father last year. I don't have much interest in these guns though.

Strange thing is, the barrel is roll-stamped .30-06 AI, which I assume is Ackley Improved. It does not appear to be rebarreled and the AI stamp matches the other writing on the barrel. Did Remington make a Factory 760 in .30-06 AI?

I dropped it off at the GS today to have the chamber slugged to make sure it was a AI.

I think the 760 in 30.06 is a great bargain in the used market. In any caliber other than 06 they are pricey but there were so many in 06 they go cheap. Let us know about the AI stamp. I've never seen it before.

I would definitely have a chamber cast made as I'm skeptical that a AI conversion would have been properly done on a 760rem. To be done correctly such conversions require the barrel to be set back

Just heard back from the GS. It is a .30-06AI. He seems to think it is factory as well, and said its safe to shoot.

I have yet to try and contact Remington, but I will soon.

I find it hard to believe that it is a factory produced '06 AI. It would have to be a Custom Shop conversion. I just don't think Remington would produce an AI, especially back in the day when that one was probably produced. If it is, it would be a rarity.
Remington is more accommodating these days though.
