I bought some Rem 6 1/2 small rifle primers to start loading 223 for an AR I just purchased. I then came across a warning from Rem about not using them in an AR. My question is do I have 3000 primers I can't use or can they be used if I don't load to the maximum, which I don't do anyway? Can they be used as small pistol primers if I reduce the load? Thanks

I might use them for pistol primers, but I wouldn't use them for an AR.
It's not so much they won't handle the pressure.
Remington made them for smaller calibers like .22 Hornet and such.
The problem is they are more sensitive and could result in slam-fires in a semi-auto.

^^Not correct at all. RC nailed it.
I'd use them for pistol primers, rework up the load or drop 5% and go for it.
Better yet, buy another rifle that uses small primers and reload for that. How bout a Rem. 700 bolt in .223.

I use small rifle primers in my .327 fed mag as recomended by the reloading data in the speer manual I believe. They fit fine.
If you had a spring kit put in your handgun you may have some miss-fires do to the primer cups being a being made from a little stronger material.
They take a little heavier blow to set them off, but they work fine in most stock revolvers. I don't know about semi-auto pistols.

There is a difference in cup thickness from 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 Remington primers.

Thanks for the information. I got a good deal on the 6 1/2s so I bought them when I bought the rifle. $26 dollars a thousand. Bought 3000. Should have done some more research before I bought them. Looks like I can use them in my 38s and 9mm though. I load light lead bullet loads in both so I will work up the loads again using these primers. Thanks again. Fatty
