The 1100 VR barrel is marked 20 Ga. Magnum For 3" Shells. My question is can I can use standard 2 3/4 " shells and have reliable action? Thank you, Bill

I'd bet not. The gas ports are probably of a different size (smaller) to accommodate the greater pressure. 2 3/4" shells may not have enough zing to cycle the action. Make the first shot count.;)

Oldnamvet -

I bet you are correct. I need to find some mag rounds so the first shot will count. Thank you, Bill

got one yes and one no...

has anyone tried to use 20 ga. 2 3/4" shells in a 3" magnum"

Thanks, Bill

I'm not sure about the 20, but in my old 12 Gauge 1100 Magnum, 2 3/4" shells will cycle the action as long as it's in good working order (a little RemOil or CLP, and reasonably clean, with a good O-ring).

Low-velocity target loads may not, but field loads will. They don't have to be really hot field loads, just not reduced-power loads. For target loads, I put on a 2 3/4" barrel.

I'd say, buy a couple boxes and try it. See what it takes to cycle it reliably.

Details

Magnum 1100's are expected to be able to function with shorter shells of a magnum designation, and usually with 2-3/4" shells that are a true high-brass type load, about 1 oz. hi-velocity or other.

Any magnum gun that functions with low brass or light loads is giving the parts an extra workout when shooting the magnums, but then again, the 2-3/4" guns that cycle the light loads are supposed to survive the beating that they take from the baby magnums, and have 2 gas posts present vs. 1 for the magnum 3" barrel.

Get a standard barrel to fit the frame for the light loads, for my best recommendation.

If you never intend to use heavy magnum loads, the system can be slightly opened in the ports.

Some of the specialty work that I do is smoothing of parts in the mechanism for greater reliability and reduced wear, so guns will function even during adverse conditions.

That has had shooters tell me that they could feel a real difference when they first pulled the bolt handle after the smoothing work.

Ask any other questions, but details from your first firing session can help with suggestions. Good shooting, be safe.

Thanks guys..

from your input I'll pick up a box of high velocity 2 3/4" shells (not target loads) and a box of 3" magnums. I have not fired this shotgun but it has a recoil pad so I assume the magnums are supposed to deliver a healthy dose of recoil! I appreciate this site more each day. Bill

Range report - test fired the 20...

I did not have a chance to get 3 inch shells but the shotgun worked just fine with both high brass super X 2 3/4 number 1 oz. 4 shot and 2 3/4 target loads with number 8 shot. They did not eject very far but both cycled fine. Bill
