I'm looking at a used Remington 1100 LT-20 Special. It's in very good condition. Intended use is primarily as a trap gun for my eldest son. I have a few questions:

1) What's the most you'd pay?

2) Is there any way to tell the vintage from the serial number? The dealer doesn't know. I checked the Remington site and they don't have a list of serial number ranges for 1100's.

3) Anything to watch out for?

4) It includes one choke (Improved Cylinder.) If I wished to change chokes will RemChokes work in it or do I need to know the age?

Thanks,

Abe

I'm not sure what the "special" stands for but a standard LT20 in good shape should bring $350-$400 maybe more depending on the area. Remington discontinued the LT20 in 1995.

In 1998 they brought out the synthetic version of this gun worth about $100 less than wood version. I believe it's still in production.

Standard Rem chokes should fit as long as the choke in it was made by Remington and was not an aftermarket gunsmithed choke.

You can get the vintage directly from Remington.
Call 800-243-9700 and give them the serial number. (Thanks Dave)
The Lovely Mrs. 9mmMike shoots an 1100 Special Field in 20 Ga. That is essentially an LT-20 with an English stock and a 21" twin-bead VR barrel with a fixed Mod choke.. It is her favorite SG. It is a hoot to shoot, very fast handling, like an old carbine lever-gun.
IIRC it was somewhere between 400 and 500 clams.

For clarification, the LT 20 is NOT discontinued. It is a current production model.

Technically, but just in a synthetic, not a true standard model.

The standard LT20 is no longer in production. The synthetic versions are being produced, but they are not the original LT20's.

Remington also makes the Skeet 20ga and the Sporting 20ga as well as the new Classic Field 20ga.

I am not sure what designation the Classic Field 20ga would be, but if Remington is bringing it back, why not call it the LT20 again.? It could be the LW20, which was a popular shotgun for a period also.

For what it's worth the Classic field 20ga, Skeet 20ga, and Sporting 20ga are all probably LT20's in disguise with minor alterations. But Reminton only lists the LT20 in the synthetic youth gun and slug gun. It's a pity, I love the old LT20 that I have had for 20 years now. I'm sure I would like any of the others also, but their price tags are a bit much.

Thanks for all the input. I picked it up on the way home tonight. I called Remington yesterday and they told me that it's a 1990 vintage. It has a 21" barrel, mid-rib bead, english stock, and one removable Remington improved cylinder choke, all out the door for $400.

Can't wait to take it to the range this weekend.

Thanks Again,

Abe
