Got a 514 in the shop today that stood out to me. Read that as someone that likes to drag home single shot Remingtons. It has 3 on the top of the barrel as does the 514s at the house but has two odd marks on the right hand side of the barrel. It looks like 2 script letters or maybe 2 dollar signs?

Anyone ever seen anything like this? Remington or owner produced marks? The marks are deep and precise but the blueing looks almost burnt around them just as it does on the 4.

Also does anyone know of where I can see a chart of the mountain and butterfly codes?

Inspection marks. Remington inspectors had different stamps they would use to indicate they had inspected a rifle. One inspector used an anchor stamp which led to stories of Navy issued Remingtons. A later inspector used a heart stamp which produced rumors of barrels being supplied by Hart.

What??

You mean the RP on mine doesn't mean it was made special for Richard Pryor like the guy who sold it to me said??

Dang! :banghead:

Inspection marks on the left side yes ( was really hoping for a chart but cant seem to find one) Are the ones on the right side more than likely the same?
