My dad chopped my remington 514 down to a manageable size when i was little, and did a really nice job on it, but i'd like to bring it back to something approaching original condition while maintaining the ability to return it to the chopped down condition if i (god forbid) ever have kids. I'm going to keep the shortened barrel, and I'm going to add a stock spacer to the current stock in lieu of getting a new stock (because stocks cost 90 dollars:what:)

I have basically everything sorted out except one minor issue. I do not have the original front sight, and i need to get a replacement. does anyone know what the original sight height was for the target front sight that came on the rifle?

It was usually a Globe type sight.
That's the tubular target sight with interchangeable inserts.

There are different methods they were attached.
Some slide on a target dovetail front block, and some slipped into a dovetail on the barrel:

Your rifle probably either has a muzzle drilled and taped for two screws, or it may have a block already attached.
You can buy more types of Globe sights from Champion's Choice:

Also, Gun Parts carry parts and sights:

I still have the 514 my oldest brother gave me when I was 10, it was his old rifle. Still shoots great, out of all my guns, it provides the most fun!

I know what type of sight it is. I just need to know the height between the bottom of the dovetail and the tip of the sight post.

thanks for the website. it has a much wider selection of sights than was available to me previously.

Height of Sight on 514

I just pulled out my 514, which I've had for nearly 50 years. I measured it several ways and the best I can come up with is 3/8 of an inch from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the bead.

Hope that helps.

Good luck on your project.

My borhter and I each had a 514 and we would amaze Dad by shooting lightbulbs at the dump. My brother's gone but that remains one of Dad's favorite memories.

The first rifle I ever fired was a 514. I consider it my heirloom gun as it was passed down from my grandfather to my father and then to me.

only partially relevant to the thread.

A very late response to this thread. I found it by doing a search for another 514 issue.

But for what its worth. I used a dial caliper and measured my 514's front sight. It is .330" high from the bottom of the dovetail to the very top of the bead.

This info is probably overcome by the fact that you already replaced your sight but it may help someone else.

On a related note. Anyone know what the screw thread size for the rear sight screws is ?

My 514, like all I have seen, has a rear sight that attaches to the barrel via two screws with .500" center to center hole spacing. I am missing the complete rear sight and need to replace everything.

Regards,
Rob
