is on sale at Dicks (ending today) for $150.

I was going to get a 10/22 and then pretty much replace every single component except the receiver, but I was looking at close to twice the cost for just a plain jane 10/22, and then about $300 in upgrades.

The financially responsible side of me is winning this battle.

*goes to research what kind of upgrades one can purchase over the wonderful internet for a 597*

extractor and hammer have been found.
who wants to take the 40 minute drive with me to Dicks?
They've got Ultramax handgun ammo on sale this week too!

found those too. MUCH cheaper then regular mags for my Sig 226 too!

make sure the guide rails inside the receiver are FINGER tight, get 3rd generation mags(with the 10 on the bottom) and you will not only be fine, but the 597 is one of the few 22's made, that have a fully adjustable rear sight. if you like to shoot open sights, I know I do. Accuracy with the 597 has never been a problem, on the contrary, it has allways been better than most.
You cannot say the same for the Ruger, which I happen to have , and like, but you are right, even though I kept the mods down to a minimum, I still paid over 100 bucks, in simple mods I did myself.

Just get a scope and a bipod and spare clip's.
Oh yea! Dont forget a rifle case.
that's about as much upgrade as you need.

got the case taken care of....buying one from my shooting buddy who traded in his 10/22 about 3 months ago, and is now looking into getting back into a 22 so we can do some competition silliouette shooting together.

and it comes with a scope, mounted and boresighted from the factory!

just need some mags and a bipod.

also, all it took for the wife to sign off on this purchase was me having a pool put in the backyard, with pavers, and new patio furniture.

wow i got hosed!

I'm trying to sell mine, its a complete jam-o-matic. How much do you people think I could get for it? Its the one with a bull barrel and scope, it also has a picitany rail and a red dot scope.

I was thinking of getting the 597 as well, but went with the 10/22 due to the aftermarket. Right now it is set up to be a squirrel gun, but if I feel like it, I can change it in about 15 minutes to anything I want myself without having to take it to a smith. With the 597 you will have a nice accurate gun, but that is all you will ever have.

doubleleg, finger tighten the guide rails, maybe even polish them.then very light oil on them. But most importantly, the Mags!!!! make sure they have the 10 inside the circle, on the bottom of the mag. try that out first, before you dump it. Also check here for the best of tips.
