I'm looking to get a .22 semi-auto. I'd like it to be accurate and to use detachable mags, (I'll probably use it for Appleseed). From what I've read the Remington 597 is accurate right out of the box and I like the stock more than the 10/22. Also, the price is right. I understand it had some severe reliability problems early on though. Have these been properly fixed, or is this a rifle to avoid at all costs? I don't mind doing a little tinkering if I have to, but sometimes you can't adequately fix a jammomatic.
I've had 10/22's before and I'll buy another one if need be, but I don't like them much in their stock form, so I figure I'm looking at $500 or more by the time I've swapped out the barrel, stock and fitted optics to it, versus maybe $300 for the Remington with decent glass.
