Remington 700-40 modern version?

Hope I got the name of this gun correct. My father has been reading a book about the snipers of the Vietnam War and how even to the Viet Cong, the Remington was a prized rifle. My father would love to see me get one, his 5'2" 115 pound daughter, to use at the gun range -- not hunt. Like my Dad, I know nothing about these guns except I'm pretty sure this rifle is no longer in production. Is there a Remy that's close that would ideal for me to use?

BTW, I wouldn't buy anything without meeting with a long guns teacher first.

The Remington 700s are a pretty diverse group of rifles these days. Back during Vietnam the Remingtons that were being built into sniper rifles were the predacessors to the Marine Corp M40 sniper rifle and the M24 Army sniper rifle.


The current Remington 700 offerings that generally offer the best accuracy are the Remington VS or Sendero lines, there's a WIDE variety of Remington 700s today but things offered with those two models I mentioned makes them a bit more suitable for target work or generally makes them more likely to be accurate.

Something like a Remington 700 VS in 223Remington or maybe even 308Winchester would go quite a ways in providing you with a really decent target rifle for the range, something you could shoot from 100-500 yards with relative ease. The 223Remington is a smaller cartridge and will be more affordable to shoot as well as providing a platform that has less recoil. The 308Winchester will be a little more expensive and have a bit more recoil but it generally has a bit more range potential.



But before getting into all this, you have any idea of a package rifle price or budget? The models I listed come in around 650-750 dollars new in the box, if found used they can be found for a bit better price.
