I have an old Leupold Vari-X II 3x9x40 on my bolt action .223. Worked great when it was on an '06; does just fine, now, after 30 years.
So, me bein' a cheapskate, I'd recommend checking gunshows for a good used version. The Leupold warranty is lifetime, for any owner.
If you figure most of your shooting will be under 200 yards, I have a Leupold 2x7 which does okay at night when I'm after Wiley Coyote...
There are a lot of the El Cheapos which will work just fine. The problem is that you'll not know until you're using one. If the warranty is good, as in "Bring it back for exchange", and you don't mind the hassle, you'll be okay. I've done okay with Tascos and Simmons, but there is a bit of uncertainty.
I dunno. The Leupold just seem to be "cleaner" as to aesthetics than a lot of other stuff.
Nikons are reportedly good; I also have done fine with Weavers.
Other good choices include the high-end Bushnells and Weaver scopes. My shooting buddy has a Leupold on his PSS and I have a Weaver on mine. Shooting at 200 yards the other day with Federal Gold ammo, I shot a 7 shot (out of ten) 1.5" group. He didn't do any better.
