I have a Remington 700 stainless varmint rifle in 308 that I bought new back in '94. The extractor broke on this gun yesterday. I was looking at the Midway web page trying to find a replacement, but they have several different ones for different guns. Does anyone know which one I need? And how hard are they to replace? Any help would be appreciated.

Depends. The size is based on case head diameter, i.e. '06 size, belted mag size, whatever. Your .308 takes the '06 size, as do all those myriad of cartridges with that very common head size. Now, is it rivetted in or snap in? The rivet type (I know that isn't spelled right-my mind is on strike) is getting hard to find, though there may be a non-factory replacement available now (if it was the magnum size and rivet, you would really have a problem finding one). But, say it is rivet type, it is kind of a bitch to change, real difficult without a special tool. I suggest you have someone do it. But, if it's the snap type (newer--the rivet is older), the just buy one and it snaps right in--easy. Good luck.

That's what I'm finding out. I have a friend that tinkers with guns and has a lot of tools. Pretty much said to bring the gun to him and find out what's in in it. Then we'll go from there.

Just to touch base, it wasn't the extractor. It was the ejector causing problems. Had a tiny piece of brass stuck in it. I thought it was the extractor as the case would fall off as it came out of the chamber. Silly me. Learn something new everyday.
