Ok dumb question here. I had to take apart this Remington 700 Classic that I picked up last week. The magazine box slid out when I took the stock off. Those are pretty tight in my old ones, never had one come out like that.

I assume the tapered end goes back in towards the top, and the curved cutout is towards the barrel. Anything else I need to know before reassembly? Anything special to get it in place properly?

You got it.

Ok that was easy enough.

I notice now when I get it all together if I push on the very front of the wood stock there's a little bit of noise like I can hear it flexing or rubbing a little. Not sure if it's not torqued down enough? Or maybe too much? Or maybe that's just totally normal and I didn't notice it before?

I believe its 45 in-lbs for wood stocks. I know with the stocks with pillars (like an HS Precision) or most chassis it's 65 in-lbs.

I got ready to start torquing it down that tight then looked at the slotted screw and though "Yeah, I don't think so." and got a set (and a backup set) of hex head screws on the way from Midway USA.

I'm still getting a rubbing noise I didn't have before between the barrel and the stock. I looked at a schematic and I don't see any kind of spacer that's supposed to be in there. Maybe when it's properly torqued it'll be ok.

45"# for Remington 700 in a wood stock, and properly speaking the mag box should be just loose. . . you don't want it pinched by the action.

I was wondering about that. It has to go in far enough that the bottom metal fits over it. I screwed it on finger tight and put it away for now. I'll experiment with it more when I get the new screws.
