Recently the Remington 700 has caught my eye and my attention for its accuracy out of the box.

A few questions that I have with it:

Is the model P available for civilians? If it is not which is the closest version available for civilians?

If it is, what is the cost or extra cost for it?

What is the deal with the detachable box magazine version? Is it available? Is it any good? Is it a considerable price hike from the original version? Is it as reliable as the non box mag 700's?

Is there any kind of grade difference like the M1A's (i.e. match, super match etc)?

How is the trigger out of the box?

.308 or 30-06?

Anything else that I should know about this rifle?

as far as i know the Ps are available to anybody. Ive never used one of remingtons DBM, but ive also never heard anything bad about them. I dont believe they come on the P models, or atleast they didnt used 2, but you can always add them as long as the gun has a BDL style floor plate. Personaly id probobly go with a lower end Remington SPS Varmint but thats just cause im cheap LOL.

I'm cheap too, so I got the 700 sps tactical in 308. I may have screwed up, though. So far the best 3 shot group that has come out of it was .46".

If I was going to choose I would get the sps Varmint in .308 it has a 26 inch bull barrel It would be my other deer rifle

if you keep your eyes open you can find the P models, I did.

most of the extra cost (usually about 200 bucks) of the 700p comes from the HS precision stock thats on it, which is real nice compared to a lot of the rem factory stocks. So if you were looking at a custom stock anyway, you'd probably do yourself a favor by getting a couple hundred bucks cheaper varmint or tactical version and then restocking it.

but if you aren't looking at a new stock, the one on the 700p is nice. *selfish plug* I'll be selling my 700p's HS precision stock in Oct. Moving to a fully adjustable one.

The trigger was about 10lbs out of the box. I had it taken down to 3 and I think it's just about perfect.

.223, .308 or 300winmag for the P model, don't think it comes in '06.

Apart from getting the barrel cut to 24", I haven't made any adjustments to it and with reloads, shooting prone with a bipod for front support and hand for rear support I average a .6moa group at 100yds, seen .3's and I'll be the first to tell you I'm not the best shot. So it's a great rifle. I would feel confident in the 700 varmint models as well though.

wow, long winded. hope it helps and welcome to THR

I appreciate the information guys. I might just look for a used sps varmint now. Maybe it'll be a nice under the tree rifle around December..
