Remington 700 mounts and rings?

Just picked up a no frills 700. Has weaver bases now and just for fun threw on some medium height rings, from who knows where, and 3x9x40 scope for a look see. I like the height I think but, not crazy about the mounts.

Any suggestions on no frills mounts and rings for a 700? I like the 2 piece mounts but not sure on the weaver.

The rifle will be used as a beater. Nothing special and for no particular purpose yet needs to be reliable and boringly dependable. I'm sure the weaver bases would be fine for this but I would be willing to change for a better set up if available.

Any thoughts?

Not a big fan of some of the Weaver brand.

I tend to like 1 piece with Picatinny rails with MOA added.
EGW mount and Burris Rings is a good budget setup - it is aluminum.

Are we talking about a short-action, or long action? I use only M1913 picatinny rails on my firearms. You can't find a stronger, more durable mount, especially in steel. Take a look at something like a Ken Ferrell base. Here is a link: http://www.kenfarrell.com/REM-700S-1-10.html

I have an extra one that I removed from a Remington short action that I sold a few years ago. I believe it is a 10 MOA offset rail.

This is a standard (long) action in 30-06.

Heavier steel is preferred. Adding weight to this rifle will not bother a thing as I'd like to get it up to about 9 lbs. I think I have about 1 lb. to go to get there. 2 piece is preferable but will consider 1 piece mounts if they add weight.
I like those leupolds but have noticed 2 piece Remington mounts and rings for around $30. They are in stock at Brownells but I have no experience either way.

I have seen a guy take a scope off of a pic rail with Leupold quick release mounts and move it one notch on the rail and not lose zero. I also have a set with the round pin QR and the seem fine.

Not sure on the Rem brand - no experience

The weaver mounts will work; we'll see about the rings. I'd try them out and see how they work.

The Weaver bases are as good as any. So are the rings as far as function goes. They aren't the best looking, but they work. I'd look for another ring that suits your fancy. Burris makes a good steel ring that will fit the bases. Generally lower is better and you should be able to get a 40mm scope to work in low rings.

You have a basic no frills rifle. If you're not careful you can end up with mounts costing 50% or more of what the rifle is worth and offer no advantages you can use. If you are trying to shave that last .001" off your group size then spend the money for the more expensive mounts. If a sub 1" gun is your goal the system you have is more than adequate.

My personal preference is either the Talley lightweights or DNZ. They are stronger than most steel mounts because the lower half of the ring is part of the base. No separate pieces to worry about attaching. They are lightweight, around 2-3 oz compared to 6-8 oz for weaker steel rings. They are also much easier to mount properly. Very reasonably priced too.

I mostly use Warne mounts with a few Leupold dovetail. If you're trying to save weight you can try the lightweight aluminum alloy Talley mounts. All have worked flawlessly.

Warne rings are good,also there are several choices that have 6 screws per ring set and are quite strong.I have some of those from Burris,and like them a lot.Lots of choices,making them's the fun part.

For budget friendly rings and bases on hunting rifles I have always ended up with Leupold. They are a little more money than the less expensive Weavers and such but they are rock solid, forget about it setups.

For anything else I use an aluminum or steel 1913 Pic rail and I really like the TPS TSR rings.

I agree, Weaver mounts are good to go. They have been around for many years and have stood the test of time. Been using them since the early sixties. I do like the Burris rings however, more than the Weaver.

Not really looking for a name brand as much as others experiences with available options and cost effective alternatives. This rifle is no beauty queen. In fact it's a very pedestrian ADL that has a good trigger. Picked it up at a local show show for a good price. Has weaver style bases that I'm not overly fond of personally. Have quite a few firearms but never a Remington 700 that's all.
I like the integral Talley base/ rings and a similar set of Remington base/ rings that are about $10 cheaper.
Still, considering a one piece base plus rings if it will add more weight. Leopold looks good too but pushing the budget even for this high brow Remington.

Hard to beat TPS steel bases and rings from SWFA. I put a set on my 700 MilSpec 5R.

Like Ball3006, I have been using Weavers for 50+ years. No problems, they return to zero better than others, and the price is right. The only down side is the tendency to rotate the scope as tightened. You learn to put enough offset in to have it straight when tight. The new four and six screw rings eliminate this problem. They don't have the snob appeal that a Pic rail and $100 rings have but your grand kids will still be using them when you are long gone.

If it is a "budget build" I go with Weaver base and rings if it is a "go all out" I go with a Near scope base and NightForce rings. I also like the 1 piece(or whatever they are called) NightForce and LaRue scope rings.

Went to the range this morning with my set up to see how accurate this rifle would be. Since I had already bore sighted it dialing it in was not really an issue.
There was zero problem with the bases and rings I had on hand and 1" 3 shot groups at 100 yards were no real feat. This rifle looks like a keeper.

The Simmons 8 point scope did well but the limited eye box at 9x was annoying. Still, not bad considering I got it in a rifle/ scope combo deal thing.... I think.

I decided to take up jmr40's advise and go for lower mounts. Problem is, there were dang near no low mounts to be found locally..... All medium or high.
I finally found a set of Burris Zee rings that would fit the bases already on the rifle. Long and the short of it. I'm keeping the weaver bases and lowering the scope height with the only rings I could find that would work at a reasonable price. Leupolds were available but way out of the budget.
Had to save where I could because I couldn't resist adding a Leupold VX-1 3x9 to this rifle. In the end, the scope was the weak link and not the bases... Or rings for that matter.

When I buy a Rem700 I take off the scope, the Weaver rings, the Weaver bases, the Rem barrel, and the Rem stock.

I typically put on a scope with adjustable elevation turret, Burris tactical rings, EGW one piece mount, cut threads and chamber on a Shilen barrel, drill the receiver to take the pin for a Hollands recoil lug, make and epoxy two concave pillars that match the receiver radius, a High Tech Specialties stock, I put on a Limbsaver recoil pad, a Harris swivel bipod, a stretchy sling, a Buttstock Ammo Pouch Cheekpiece, and a dog-gone-good rear bag.

Its a good set up for this rifle. It's holding a good 1- 1/12" at 100 yards which is good. The rifle has been on the money with two different scopes and two different rings and two different loads. I like it.

The Leupold opened up he eye box though it cost near what I paid for the rifle. Tremendous eye relief!

The Zee rings are excellent quality. Way beyond the "whatever I had had on hand" rings I originally stuck on top. Though They did push the budget beyond my subjective goal I am very happy. When a rifle hits like this anyone would be happy.

I'm with Abel - DNZ one piece. I'm on my sixth. It has a number of things going for it – it starts as a solid block, and the first CNC machining pass makes what becomes the ring centers... the rings cannot be misaligned. It also eliminates any possibility of the rings loosening from recoil. It’s hard anodized, requires no lapping, has hex-head screws, and best of all – made in the USA, in North Carolina. I can’t say enough good things about them – they look like they grew out of the top of the gun.
