My long, drawn-out rifle search may be coming to a close. I found a screaming deal on a Remmy 700 SPS Varmint in .308 that I may be picking up at the end of the week. Any experiences with this gun? I have read a couple very positive reviews praising the rifle's accuracy at range, and though somewhat heavy I feel that it' still light enough to hunt with as long as I'm not doing any really big hikes. Any owners on here? Impressions?

I picked up a SPS Varmint 24" bbl in .223 (1 in 12 twist) earlier this year. Got it with a 4x12 scope and bipod for under 500.00. A lot cheaper than the AR varmint variant I was thinking about. Not great for really long shots(over 600yds) but good enough for my personal war on groundhogs.

If the weight doesn't bother you to much then go for it.
in my opinion a remington 700 "any" variant is the best deal your going to get for a rifle that has a bunch of different configurations and after market parts You could get a savage for a good price, but i would personally take the remington 700 action over a savage any day. not to say they are not good guns. remington also has fairly good out of the box accuracy.

1832: That's probably due to the limitations of the .223 cartridge past 600 yards than the rifle itself; a .308 with a 26-in barrel should be good out past 800 yards...

I have this rifle! It makes me smile to say it because I found one after MONTHS of daily searching for one when they first came out and they are still hard to get. It is a great rifle and even better if you get a new stock. Do a google on it and snipercentral.com did a review on it.

Yeah, sniper central claims that it uses the same barrel and action setup as the 700P, which is certainly a tried-and-true design. However, I can get this one for a good bit cheaper than I've found 700Ps for (I'm a poor college student who is a stickler for bang-for-buck firearms). I can always get a better stock when the funds allow.

I was in the same boat. Heck I still ride that boat but I got a GREAT deal. I was asking around and could never get one when I saw it online at impactguns.com, and when I called they only had 2. So I ran home and put it on layaway and paid it off as soon as I could. They even had a few the other day, maybe thats another option for you?

I picked it up today. It was at Dicks Sporting Goods, they're having a sale on lots of rifles right now. $550 out the door, complete with Leupold rings and bases, Remington-labed 4-12x optics, and trigger lock. The rifle is in OD green, which apparently was some exclusive deal with Dicks because all other ones I've seen are black.

Hoping to try it out tomorrow if the weather holds up.

My dad is the proud new owner of a Rem 700 SPS tactical, .308 with 20" barrel, its a sweet shooter, 1" groups at 100 yards. Its got a Nikon 3-9x scope on it, wieghs about 8 lbs, recoil is very mild, doesn't beat me up at all. Bottom line, this is a friggin sweet rifle!:D

sounds sweet bet that OD green looks sweet.
post some pics and a range report if ya can?

That's probably due to the limitations of the .223 cartridge past 600 yards than the rifle itself

You can shoot to 1000 yards with a .223 with the right bullets and twist rate.

And I believe the member Doc 2005 has one that shot under .2MOA at 100 yards, so you should have an accurate gun. In the future you might want to change to stock though.

I got one for around $500 at a Dicks once on sale. The SPS Varmit in .223 will take a yote at 400 yds stock. Great rifles if you dont plan on taking it hiking, they weigh a little more.

I bought one of the O.D. stocked ones from Dick's. I took off the cheap Remington scope that came on it and topped it off with a Nikon ProStaff 3x9x40, and added a bipod. I put a decent sling on it, and in trekking out to my 'yote hunting spots, I don't find it too heavy to tote with the sling. I wouldn't want to lug it up and down any mountians, but the weight is not too extreme.

I have the .223 with the 26" bbl., and it comes with the 1/12 twist. It shoots Remington 45gr. hollowpoints into little tiny groups, and I also shoot some Black Hills 55gr soft points through it with great results. I bought some 50gr VMax's, and will try them out soon.

For the $, I am extremely happy with my 700 SPS Varmint. In fact, my wife bought it for me "just because", and she bought me the Nikon for an anniversary present. Both she and the rifle are keepers. :D

They make an SPS Tactical with a 1/9 twist. I don't shoot the heavy bullets out of my rifles with a 1/9 twist anyway...62gr is tops, and most rounds are 55gr. But, the option is there for those who desire.

I'm hoping to get it to the range sometime within the week; it's been really nasty weather here due to runoff from tropical storm Fay.

One nice thing about the 700 is that you can upgrade it as you go. I'll probably save up for a McMillan A5 or something and throw it on later. Optics will be upgraded eventually as well. In the meantime I'll probably enjoy it a lot as it is!

Pics will be up soon....

their in about every gun store i go into lately.no shortage around here.great guns but i here the stocks are flimsy neer the end and touch the barrel after you shoot them awhile.i picked one up at the store and could easily press the flimsy rubber stock against the barrel,so thats not good if you intend to mount a bipod on it.
