I'm finally going to get my Remington 700pss,but I have a scope
mount question.I picked up a Springfield Armory 4x14x56 range
finding scope at the Reno gunshow.:D
I'd like to mount that on the 700 for the time being(until I get a
leupold). What mount would anybody suggest for the Springfield?
What mount would work with a leupold as well?Is there one that
will work for both?
Any and all suggestions for scope, mount, etc. welcome.

I would say Badger, IOR Valdada or Leupold. All of these are very very good Bases and Mounts. And i am assuming the Springfield is a 30mm tube, so any 30mm Leupold you get will work fine with the same Mounts.

I went with Leupold QRW rings and bases on mine...

Solid, without being too bulky:

I went with #216 one piece mount and Precision Reflex 1" rings from Mounting Solutions Plus. Rock solid set up; heavier than the Leupold QD set up, but not an easily removable one- I like the Badger Ord stuff also but didn't need the cant built into the one piece base they make. I don't see my self running out of elevation adjustment that often.

Gewehr98- is that an aftermarket stock or is it refinished? I really like the OD with the black spider webs. My Weatherby SVM has that finish only in desert tan w/black spider webs.

762x51- I like the Steyr type bolt handle you have there. Is it an aftermarket piece? Did you have to machine the stock bolt handle to attach it?

On one Remmy I have Leupold MK IV rings & base. Badgers are better but they weren't around when I got my set-up. On another Remmy (700 LTR) I have the Leupold Quick Release. The scope is the Tasco 10 x 42 SSM and it doesn't like the MK IV so I went one grade down.

It's a factory H-S Precision PSS stock...

They didn't always come in black. A certain Sheriff's Department in Northern California ordered their batch of rifles in that color. When they upgraded to McMillan A-3 stocks, I acquired one of their now-surplus olive/black stocks.

H-S Precision sells them in several colors, see here:

Gewehr,

Is that some sort of anti-reflective screen on the front lens of your scope?

bogie,

I always thought one-piece mounts DID ad some rigidity to the action. Why is that not true? (And I don't have any facts to back up my presumptions, It just kind of made sense to me.)

Thanks,
Steve

I use the Leupold Mk4 bases and rings on my Rem 700VS.
It's a cheap tasco SS scope, but it works so well and has retained zero forever, that I dare not remove it from the rifle. :)

QuarterBoreGunner:

The bolt knob is made by Badger Ordnance. I sent my bolt to them and they installed the knob all said and done for I believe $80. You can also by the knob separately direct from them or from Brownells and install it yourself. I wasn't too comfortable hacking off my bolt knob myself. ;)

My thinking is-
If we're to believe that action-flex occurs on high-powered rifles, and we know it does, a one-pice base will help 'stiffen' this area. With a 2-piece setup the scope is the only part that is taking these stresses. The energy is being transferred though the rings and into the scope's main-tube. I'd rather have a solid piece of steel do this job than an aluminum tube full of glass.

That said, my main rifle wears a 2-piece base system. I guess I really don't give a damn.:)

It adds some partial benefit...

But I'll be darned how much. Maybe not even stiffening of the action, but damping of the action's harmonics. Benchresters like to sleeve their Remington 700 and Model 7 actions with outer tubes of aluminum, for an even greater effect. As an aside, it also allows them to justify sinking as much money into upgrading an action as they would have were they to buy a Nesika Bay, Stolle, or Shilen DGR action. So a one-piece scope base isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;)

I, as well, have the QRW rings and bases on three Rem 700 rifles and love them. Rock solid and no issue at all w/ maintaining zero.

I have moved the scopes between rifles as had only a couple of clicks adjustments back to x ring.....

Highly recommended!!!!!!

Gewehr,

Does that front lens cover cut down much light transfer? Is the image noticably darker?

Steve

No different than the 4" sunshade it replaced.

Or should I say, no darker than the 4" sunshade it replaced. ;)

BTW, looks like Bogie's a wee bit grumpy today. :(

Gee bogie, you really know how to expand on a subject. Lot's of vocabulary, there.
