Remington 870 Express?

870 Express will hit you a little under 300 but for the money they can't be beat. One word of advise, take it out and shoot the hell out of it!!!!! It's one gun that gets better with age and rounds down the barrel. I have had probably a dozen pass through my hands (I make them into HD guns, short barrel, mag ext and a light) over the years and one guards my "palace" every night..... :D :D

xbox,

i have 2 870 express guns. they function as they should, and i have been pleased. one is my skeet, dove gun, the other has an 18" bbl and serves as my HD shotgun and my official rabbit hunting gun.

shoot the heck out of em to break em in. oh, and keep em good and oiled on the exterior.

The main gripe I've heard about the Expresses is the finish. It's a bead blasted bluing job with a pretty rough texture. It has the potential to hold a lot of moisture and can rust easily. If you get one, be sure to employ a good rust preventative.

Finish issues aside, it’s a great shotgun.

Lots of law enforcement agencies use the 870 in one form or another. It’s a shooter for sure-- clean or dirty it will shoot.

They are made to be used….a lot.

I don’t know what you want it for, but if the finish is an issue for you the Marine Magnum version will solve that problem.

Not sure of the exact numbers but I believe the 870 has been in production for about 50 years now and there have been around 7 million of them sold. (or something like that)

Thats got to say something eh?

I'd put my money into an older model Express shotgun or a used Wingmaster as they don't have the "issues" of some of the newer ones that folks have been complaining about lately.

I agree with this post.

I'm a southpaw shooter who likes Mossberg better. But, for right handed shooters, Remington ergos ain't as bad. I wouldn't buy one for duck hunting, but sitting in the AC around the house, keeping it oiled, it'll work. If I just HAD to have one, I'd get it camoed. If it was for home defense, I'd just sand blast it and paint it with rustoleum. :D It'll shoot, though, even rusty.

However, *NO* police depts use the 870 Express, and that's what he asked about. The fact that police departments and law enforcement agencies specifically *avoid* the 870 Express should tell you something.

I have an older express. I like it quite a bit. I don't shoot it much these days - it has become my bad weather bird gun/deer gun, with some occasional trap and skeet to keep in practice with it. The only issue I have ever had with it is my short shucking it, and that is obviously on me, not on it. To keep from rusting, I simply clean it after being in bad weather, and wipe it down with Rem Oil before I go out in bad weather. It has never failed me, and I don't think it ever will. If it ever fails for any reason, I suspect it will be me who fails the gun, not the gun that fails me.

I really don't have anything bad to say about it. I have also heard bad things about the news ones, but I have not personally known anyone who has had any issues with one. I have no regrets about getting one.

I must take exception to this statement. The 870 Express is not at the same standards of the 870 Police but some people do believe that it is a valuable asset. There are departments using the 870 Express. A couple examples.

The 870 Express (and Wingmasters for that matter) can be had in a left-hand action, but if you're going for an HD gun you'll pay though the nose for a left-hand 20" smooth-bore slug barrel.

They probably have a department armorer with a chamber hone on call while function testing all the new ones too.

I've got two, I like them better than my Mossy because the safety on the trigger gaurd is so much easier to disengage.

Georgia DNR issued 870 express turkey guns with 21" VR barrels to their officers a few years ago. Cheaper than the riot guns and have worked fine after replacing the turkey tube with an IC tube.

My express has the "bead blasted" finish and I came across a used blued 20" smooth bore barrel with rifle sights. I roughed it up a little with a scotch brite pad and flat blacked it then added a 2 rd mag extension. Bingo, HD shotgun! Sorry crappy cropped pic.

The two you listed....one has five officers and one has nine. I just don't, for the life of me, see how I could have missed those. Weird.

If you buy a new 870 (either type) be sure to clean all of the lube/preservative/crap out of the action/bbl. before you fire it. If it gets burned in it's much harder to remove and will foul the action.
