Fella whats to buy a couple of hunting dogs and is kinda short on cash, here in MAryland. He is offering me a remington 870 Police Magnum with a folding stock, 8 shot tube extension set up with three picaniny rails. He owes me another 600$, is it worth the 600$?
Thanks
Jerry

I'd have some questions first.

If the gun is a genuine Police gun it'll be stamped with the POLICE MAGNUM stamp on the receiver.
If there's no Police stamp either it's an old Police model or it's a not a police model at all.

I question the bolt. Remington stopped installing chrome plated bolts in police guns at least 20 years ago. Since then the bolts have been black.

I can't make out the extension, but it clearly isn't a Remington factory version, and looks like a cheap Tac-Star version.

The barrel has a stand off on the muzzle, which is not used on any standard Remington Police model, but is available on one of the cheaper Express guns.

I don't think the folding stock is factory.

Bottom line, I don't think I'd pay that amount of money for a used 870 that may or may not be a police gun and is tricked out with non-factory fad parts.
For that money, you can buy a brand new 870P Police gun and fit it out however you want.

If you never want to see your money and you want to help him buy the dogs -- just do it.

Remington 870 Police Magnum whats it worth

Yes, it is stamped "Police Magnum" and yes the folding stock is "after market" Does that help out anything ??

I'd have a hard time paying more than $200, even though it is a Police reciever, because of the cheesy quality ATI accessories and the funky breacher barrel.

If he still has all the orginal components then it might be worth another $50-$75 on top of that.

agreed... Decent gun, but I would ask what they want for just the gun, take off all the crap. Folding stock, muzzle "thing" etc. and it would be worth $250 or so.

Remington 870 Police Magnum whats it worth

Recently found a new one in a gun shop, "unmodified" $675, so it seems like all these 200-250$ claims are wayyy off target!!!!
But, thanks for the responses

Newer, factory marked 870 Police guns in very good used condition sell for around $400. Sometimes more, sometimes less, take a look at Gunbroker.com and search "Remington 870 Police" to see what's being bid on right now. From time to time batches of agency trade-in 870s show up on the market and they often do sell for $225-300 apiece.

Paying 'new gun' price for used guns is not something I make a habit of doing. In your case, it might well be a case of 'take this gun in exchange for the debt, or wait for an uncertain future to arrive to get full repayment.' That has more bearing on this case than the used or new price of an 870P IMHO. Depending on this person's reputation and ability to pay off the amount owed, I might well take the deal and call it even.

Even if it did mean taking a bit of a haircut on the deal. A percentage of something is better than all of nothing, IMHO.
