This was in the local news in the past few days. Remington is expanding their Lonoke, Arkansas ammunition manufacturing plant. Production is expected to start in the spring of 2014.

This isn't about supply and demand, this is about previously scheduled business expansion to manufacture “high-tech” ammunition.

It kinda makes me wonder what that will do to the cost of ammunition from Remington . . . to make up the cost of that $32mil?

okay - someone had to post this...

Remington set market $32 Million expansion to produce.... the newest generation of Thinderturds. lol

That is as good as it gets. I always like Remington .22 target. Its my baseline ammo to sight in my .22s. I wish that Winchester will follow with their own as well.

All of these ammo makers have seen the ultimate demand is not firearms but ammo to feed those firearms. THats where the golden goose lies. One firearm with a million round stockpile is all one needs to last a lifetime of shooting.

Just today say P-mags for $15 each at a store.

Another store had small pistol primers (43,000 of them!) for $45 per 1000 (yes a high price but they had alot and in time that price will drop.)

Give it time folks and stop paying through the nose for your ammo.

I wonder what they mean by high tech ammo?
I have a friend who works there who obviously can't say a whole lot (and I could probably post even less) who was talking to me about what I suspect was part of this expansion. From what I gathered, it's more "high tech manufacturing" than "high tech ammunition."

There are some machines and methods there that are pretty old. I just wish they'd get something to polish the brass enough to at least make it look as good as that Serbian stuff. I haven't had any problem with their ammo, but some of it looks like its been rolling around in the bed of my truck for a couple months.

Don't remember which, but I read or heard that Winchester is opening a new ammo manufacturing plant in Oxford in July. That's all I know about it, but I hope these new plants alleviate (sp) some of the shortages.

Good for my home state.

That is good news. Going to take a year to do the expansion. A year... you can see what it takes to increase production beyond just adding shifts.

Probably nothing. They don't get to sell at any price they want (they can ASK what they want, but not actually sell ;)). They have competitors with no such expansions. They'll charge what the market will bear. They have to pay for their expenses (including this expansion) out of whatever the profit margin ends up being after the market price settles in.

Since Remington doesn't sell directly to the public, but through wholesalers and then retailers, those folks will set the price you pay. Remington will charge what it needs to recoup costs and make a profit - or it won't do it, plain and simple

It is interesting that they announced a plant expansion when Remington is for sale. I suspect Beretta will be doing the same thing, but the question for them is "where".
