I'm thinking about getting a Remington Model 870 Tac-2. I can get it for $549.99, which I guess ain't a bad price. Anyone have one or can recommend a comparable house gun. I like the stock and the extended tube already on the gun.

I would say get it. 870’s are awesome; I use a Mossberg 590 and Winchester 1200 w/ a pistol grip. I think a pistol grip is a little more suited for in home defense use but you definitely can’t go with an 870 -stocked or gripped-

$549 is pretty reasonable for that setup. You might be able to save a few bucks buying the Knoxx stock separately and installing it yourself.

It's a great setup. The stock soaks up recoil really well.

Mr. Designer, I think you well love you 870. Take a look at the powerpak for the Knoxx stock.I have tried shooting with and with out my Mesa side saddle. I think I'm going to leave it off, mostly a weight factor.

Remington 870 Wingmaster 12ga bought off gunbroker...$170
ATI 8-shot magazine extension..................................$40
barrel clamp............................................................$15
18.5" barrel.............................................................$90
Sold 28" stock barrel on ebay.....................................-$68
Total....................................................................$257

The chuckle I get when I think of someone spending almost $600 on a shotgun that will most likely rarely or never be fired.....priceless.

Yeah, I kind of agree. If I had it do again, I probably would not do it the way I did, but would go more along the lines that Sparkyguy did.

As far as seldom or never fired, that is a little off. I have put about 2000 rounds through my tricked out 870 in the 2 or so years that I have had it, but I realize that is probably the exception, not the rule.

On the other hand, my plain straight stock $239.00 870 express 28" 12 ga. Rem Choke model will do what an $8000.00 Kreighoff will, so I guess those Kreighoff guys are just idiots.:)

The fact that some folks play Pinnochle and some like to shoot skeet is what makes the world go 'round.

The chuckle I get is when guys put away there shotgun after fifty rounds of 3" slugs because their shoulder hurts.
It's only money, I can't take it with me, and me kids well just squander it.

I normally shoot about 100-150 rounds at clays before I start whining, but I doubt those "tacti-cool" guns make it half that before their owner starts crying their wrists are achin'. Basically, a gun that looks cool but is painful to shoot much is a waste, IMO. I'd rather leave my kids something they can actually use, not fantasize their in a bad Wesley Snipes movie in.

After finding out the main difference between the 870 Express, 870 Tactical and the 870 Police is the level of finishing, I'm going to start by looking for a used 870 in any version and will install the Knoxx stock and the extension tube myself. If I can't find a good used gun, I'll get a new 870 Express synthetic 7 shot for around $320 and add the Knoxx stock.

I bought this Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga a cpl weeks ago off gunbroker for $199.

It has the screw-in choke, 28" vented rib barrel and capable of firing 3" shells. It's in near perfect condition, and all I had to do was give it some sprays of break-free and clean it as previous owner didn't appear to clean/oil it at all.

I'm of the same mind since shooting a Benelli M3 last weekend... my 590 was much easier on the shoulder, and just about as fast. Didn't have quite the same "smooth" feel to the pump, but it didn't make me think twice every time I pulled the trigger, either. ;)

Well, with the Knoxx Spec. Ops recoil reducing stock, it ain't gonna hurt. Weight also helps reduce felt recoil (adding accessories, sidesaddles with ammo, etc.

I'm not familiar with these stocks, so you may or may not be right. I was mainly referring to the short pistol grip stocks many youngins' feel looks "badazz", when in reality they hurt plenty when fired more then a cpl shots. Another thing is, where and what are you shooting these "tacti-cool" guns at? I've never seen anyone use such a weapon at public clay shoots or even small party clay shoots. Maybe it's a generation gap thing, but I'm positive they would get a laugh from the elder folk at such a gathering.

There is a big difference between pistol grip only stocks (the ones always used in movies) and buttstocks with pistol grips (ala AR-15/AK-47 style). Many feel that the buttstock with pistol grip gives them more control, and others don't. The Knoxx Spec. Ops stock fitted to the SG in the OP's picture has recoil reduction devices that make it more pleasant to shoot.

Whatever. Do you have an answer to the other part of my post?

Eh?

So? My shotgun is for defense, not blasting clay targets. Although, it could do that...but there are no trap ranges around here, so I've never shot any clays. I'll shoot my 870 at one, though, if I get the chance.

Exactly my point. These tacti-cool guns are "used" for defense. In reality, it's not used for anything. Not used for clays or hunting. IMO, all that stuff on the side/front/stock is an overgrown kids' fantasy. Sure, you can take it out to the woods and blast some watermelons with it, but that fun is short-lived and it will never be used for anything else. That "recoil reducing" stock isn't reducing anything when it sits in the closet for 99.99999% of it's life. People can spend their money however they want. That's the beauty of being free. I only wish if they wanted to throw their money away, they'd throw it my way and I'd spend it on something worthwhile.

Uhm. I try to shoot mine every week, or at least every chance I can get. And I plan to take a class sometime soon, once I get my gun set up the way I want.
