Remington Model 870P MAX

Paid $720 USC for mine from a Northern Illinois gun dealer. I put a sidesaddle and a singlepoint sling attachment on it and it was still less than $800. Patterns well with 00 buck (Rem Express 2 3/4") to about 20-25 yards. Well meaning 5-8 pellets in centermass "killzone." Haven't shot the slugs past 25yds, but if I did my part they would all touch at that range. I've heard that the Federal Tac buck shot loads will pattern tighter. YMMV
The Surefire forend is a great addition to the shotgun. The new grip texture and permanent on/off, in addition to the momentary pad is a vast improvement over the older forends I've used previously.
The Ghostring rear sight is good, but the adjustments are crude. Not necessarily a bad thing, afterall it IS a shotgun. It took me a few adjustments-- eyeballing it for elevation and windage to get it hitting where I was aiming it. I recommend using Loc-Tite on the allen screws once you've got it zereod. (Allen keys not provided)
The recoil pad is fantastic. Very forgiving and a little tacky to keep it from slipping off clothing. I didn't mind the short stock at all, (I'm 6'2) still had a good cheekweld and kept my nose far enough away from sling attachment to avoid bashing it on recoil.
Hope this helps anyone considering it.

How much is a base police model going for these days? Im just curious, since except for the lack of a pistol grip and ghostring sights, my express HD synthetic with R3, surefire light, singlepoint sling, and sidesaddle seems to be a similiar gun for a fraction of the price. I realize the police is supposed to be a much nicer model than the express, and my gun is lacking ghostrings, but I cant imagine paying 800 bucks for this package. I guess it would be convienant to bring it all home assembled and ready to go except for a patterning board, but besides that Im not sure what it has going for it.

surefire front set up, about $200
ghost ring with Xsystem front I would guess to be $150/$200
your HD is a matt finish where the 870P is parkerized (?? Cost)
Plus the 870P has different/stonger internals ???? - I am sure others will help out here. All depends on what works for you. The base price for a

870P with bead sights - anyone venture a guess??

If it's what you are looking for, it's a good deal...

This is what the Remington LE website says is different from the standard 870P:

• Davis Speedfeed® IV-s 13" LOP pistol grip stock
• 2 shot extension tube
• Surefire® Weaponlights™ (Model 618 FA)-a 6V Shotgun tactical light
• Wilson Combat®/Scattergun Technologies Ghost® Ring Rear Sight
• XS® interchangeable front sight
• Remington R3 recoil pad

If you can purchase all of these add-ons and get them installed by a 'smith (where req'd) for less than the price that WildthatstoomuchAlaska is selling them for - then you are a much better shopper than I.

This configuration is not exactly what I was looking to build - but it is close enough. Also, since it is being purchased fully dressed out, I only have one place to go if I have any problems.

I looked around and ordered from WA. Known dealer, done bidness w/ him in the past, recommend him highly.

YMMV,

But I don't have it yet...

Forgot to say that I can't give you any feedback on the 870P MAX itself because I just ordered it from WA a short while ago and we are waiting for it to come in. They're apparently backordered at the factory

I wish I could give you an impression of the fit 'n finish of the gun, I really do... :( , but I can't.

(ps - WA was completely upfront about the backordered status before he accepted my order. I knew what I was getting into.)

Oh sure, what a tease...

:D

Hmmmm, where's the happy dance smilie when you need it...

Thanks, WA!

Regarding Safety---It does not have any internal lock feature, it is a standard safety button.

Fit and Finish--- Parkerizing was very matte and uniform. It has an almost suede finish to it, like leaving a car in the primer coat. Everything fit together as well as other 870's I've owned, which is to say well. The front sight ramp is silver soldered on, while the front sight is dovetailed into the ramp. My sight is non-tritium, just a large white dot. The rear scattergun ghost ring is held on by two allen screws.

I have experienced what I consider to be excessive lead fouling. I do shoot slugs 95% of the time so I will have to deal with this inconvenience. Just makes cleaning a chore. Not sure if the Rem slugs are too soft or the barrel is too rough, the barrel appears to be polished uniformly. Most of the leading appears approx 3in rear of the muzzle. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Owned it since August and still very pleased with it....

I may have to order one of these up. I can't find the exact config that I want, but this is close except for the sights and pistol grip.

After much thought and going back and forth I have settled on a different model Remington. I first looked at the max... Just could not get used to the pistol grip or the ghost sights... Guess I am to "old school".. anyway I ordered the

Speedfeed Sport Synthetic Stock & Fore-end 18" Imp. Cyl. Tritium Rifle Parkerized 4419

Got this one new for $475.00 - very happy with the price and the feel of the standard stock and sights fit me better. I thank everyone for the thoughts and suggestions.
