Remington...what happened to them?

I have not bought a brand new gun in many a year. All of my guns are old. I prefer to buy older, used guns and have them checked out by a competent smith. I love old sporterized Mausers, Springfields, Enfields and Krags. I also look for older Savage Mod 99s and Win 94s.
The quality was there, back in the day, and if the guns were well cared for they are worth more than the purchase price and the gunsmith fee. To me at least.
I suppose I'm not very good at supporting our new-fangled consumerism based economy.

The problem is you are trying to spend the same amount as you did 25 years ago. It does not work that way - there is inflation.

A Model 700 that cost $160 in 1960 would be $1200 now. And if you go buy a $1200 Remington 700 new today, it will be every bit as nice as the 1960 model.

A $450 rifle today is only $60 in 1960 money - and you could not buy a new Model 700 for $60 in 1960 because that price point did not exist - it was created by market demand.
