What's the skinny on this rifle? There's a slightly used 30-06 carbine in a local shop for a fair price. I like the way it handles and I'm sure it would serve as a great hog gun (quick follow up shot, if needed). I imagine it would be a great firearm for LA Riot-type defensive situations, if the need arose.

But my review of this 750 leads me to think it has durability problems. Is that accurate? anyone have any experience with this carbine? Thanks!

The 750 is the newest in the 742, 7400, lineup. None of the previous guns have a great reputation for either reliability or accuracy. I had a 742 briefly years ago and didn't care for it. The 750 has supposedly addressed some problems and is supposed to be better.

As near as I can tell as long as they are kept very clean and well maintained they tend to be OK. It is not desinged for sustained fire like a military rifle. It wouldn't hold up very long in suppressing a riot if the need arose.

Yeah, that's what I'm hearing. I really don't need a new hunting rifle, but I thought this would serve as a good "dual-purpose" firearm. Still, we all "hear" things on the internet that are not necessarily true. So, I wonder what you base your opinion upon. Is it a poorly made firearm? Is there something about its design that leads us to believe it can't reliably shoot 50 rounds in a 3 minute time frame? Any info would be appreciated, as I wouldn't want to pass it up based upon less than accurate info (not questioning your conclusions, of course). Thanks!

I have an acquaintance that has a couple 7400's, and a buddy recently bought a LNIB 742.

From I hear, they don't hold up over long periods of time. One of the 7400's (the one that gets shot more) was hard broke by 500 rounds and had to go back to the factory for warranty work. It had minor repair issues just getting to that point, too. This was in .30-06 if it matters. Apparently they are decent in accuracy, good enough for the occasional deer once or twice a year. Defensive riot protection rifle... I'd look into something else.
