Removing 870 HD barrel

Like the title says, I've got the HD 870 w/18 inch open choke barrel.

I want to put a 20 inch barrel w/rifle sights on it.

The shotgun has the magazine extension. The magazine extension screws into/out of the barrel nut.

Before I attack the barrel nut with tools, does the barrel nut screw off the magazine like the magazine cap on my 870 Wingmaster?

Thanx. I made the swap. Now, I'm curious. How critical is it to reinstall the barrel/magazine clamp? The clamp mars the barrel.

It's not critical at all if you don't whack the mag extension on something and break the threads off the magazine tube.

That's what it's there for.

Maybe you could line it with black vinyl electrical tape to prevent scratches.

With the Remington factory extension, the clamp also prevents it from unscrewing under recoil.

Also, without the clamp a good bump can knock the extension off the gun, which usually damages the guns magazine tube.
